October 2016 – Aníbal Sabater will be presenting on Saturday, October 29th at the International Association of Lawyers’ (UIA – Union Internationale des Avocats) 60th Annual Congress in Budapest, Hungary.
Aníbal will be addressing the topic of Economic Sanctions and International Arbitration along with panelists Patricia Ann Peterson, Mathias Audit, Anne-Carole Cremades, Vladimir Khvalei, András Szecskay, Jane Willems, Delphine Wietek, William Laurence Craig, and Nadia Darwazeh.
This session will focus on legal and practical considerations in addressing issues arising from economic sanctions. The program will consist of two panels. The first will examine the notion of economic sanctions, their sources and their relevance to international arbitration. The topic will be approached from the perspectives of counsel, arbitrator and arbitral institution.
The second panel will look at the impact of economic sanctions on a dispute when applied as the lex contractus or as mandatory law, the enforcement of sanctions ordered by arbitrators and various issues related to the enforcement of arbitral awards.
Aníbal Sabater is an international arbitration specialist with over 18 years of experience, representing clients from around the world and industries as diverse as construction, energy, mining, shipping, technology, and telecommunications, in arbitrations under all major international arbitration rules, including AAA/ICDR, ICC, LCIA, and UNCITRAL. He has also acted in several investment arbitration cases under the UNCITRAL Rules and the ICSID Convention/Rules, as well as in commercial disputes involving states and state-owned entities.
