Anibal Sabater and Agustina Alfaro Contribute to SVAMC Guidelines on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Arbitration

May 2024—The Silicon Valley Arbitration & Mediation Center (SVAMC) Artificial Intelligence Task Force published this week its Guidelines on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Arbitration. Chaffetz Lindsey’s Aníbal Sabater and Agustina Alfaro actively participated in the process.

The SVAMC AI Guidelines provide a set of principles to ensure the fair and ethical application of AI in arbitration proceedings as AI use continues to grow in the legal field. A first draft of the Guidelines was published in August 2023 along with an invitation for comments. Earlier this year, a Guidelines Review Committee was formed to collate and decide on the implementation of the comments received to the draft. Aníbal was a member of the Guidelines Review Committee and and Agustina Alfaro its administrative assistant.

Rainbow Willard and Agustina Alfaro Lead a Lecture on Pretrial Activities in US Civil Procedure at IE Law School

May 2020 – On May 12th, Rainbow Willard and Agustina Alfaro delivered a lecture about pretrial activities in US civil procedure at IE Law School (Madrid).

The lively discussion that followed highlighted the similarities and differences with the analogous procedural stage under the European Rules of Civil Procedure, a soft law instrument prepared by the European Law Institute (ELI) and the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT)—which is about to be finalized and adopted by both institutions.

The lecture was conducted online and attended by over 50 students from various jurisdictions, including Spain, USA, Guatemala, Colombia, Venezuela, Mauritania, Belgium, Romania, Germany, Egypt, Russia, Italy, UAE, and Kazakhstan.

The lecture and discussion were held as part of the activities of the Jean Monnet Chair in European Civil Procedure granted by the European Commission to Professor Marco de Benito at IE University.

Agustina Alfaro to Serve as Faculty in Argentina’s Austral University Program on International Contracts & Transnational Jurisdiction Litigation

May 2020 – Beginning June 23rd, Agustina Alfaro will serve as faculty in the “International Contracts and Transnational Judicial Litigation” program organized by Austral University in Argentina. This innovative program is aimed at practitioners and scholars who wish to deepen their theoretical and practical skills in the field. The course will address current trends in private international law, international contract law and international commercial law in Argentina and other Latin American countries.

The program will begin on June 23rd and continue every Tuesday and Thursday through September 10th.The course will be conducted entirely online. More information is available here.

Agustina Alfaro Moderates AYAP and WWA Panel on Arbitration Institutions’ Reactions to COVID-19

May 2020 – On Tuesday, May 5th, Agustina Alfaro moderated a panel discussion titled, “Reactions of Arbitration Institutions before COVID-19,” with Sara Marzal Yetano (legal counsel, ICSID), Juan Pablo Argentato (legal counsel, ICC) and Julián Bordaçahar (legal counsel, PCA).

The discussion, entirely in Spanish, drew attention to the measures taken by institutions to mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, including electronic filings, virtual hearings, and potential amendments to the arbitration rules. The full webinar is available here.

The event was hosted by Argentina Young Arbitration Practitioners (AYAP) and Women Way in Arbitration (WWA).
