James Hosking, Yasmine Lahlou and Caline Mouawad to Speak on Panels at Columbia Arbitration Day

October 2011 – A diverse panel, including a representative of the Irish foreign ministry’s Middle East and North Africa department and a journalist specializing in the Middle East, who had just returned from two five-week assignments in Libya, shared their views with attendees at the ABA International Section Fall Meeting in Dublin on the challenges facing regimes in transition in the aftermath of the overthrow of despotic regimes in the Middle East and North Africa. The panel, co-organized by the ABA’s Middle East Committee, which is co-chaired by associate Yasmine Lahlou, presented the audience with an account of how the world’s powers were taken by surprise by the Arab Spring, triggered by a street vendor’s tragic revolt in Tunisia, and described the international community’s efforts to adjust to this new reality. The panel also discussed the political dynamics at play in the countries in transition, the values that will frame their future, and the difficult choices confronting the leaders of the revolutionary movements to set up national reconciliation and transitional justice.

March 2011 – Chaffetz Lindsey associate Yasmine Lahlou continues her work as co-chair of the Middle East Committee of the Section of International Law of the American Bar Association.

From March 6-12, Lahlou was part of an ABA delegation to Amman, Jordan and Beirut, Lebanon. The delegates met with local diplomats, members of the Governments and leaders of the legal community to discuss the rule of law and political developments in the region.

During the tour, Lahlou met with the Presidents of the Jordan Bar Association and Beirut Bar, Lebanon’s Attorney General, the Ministers of Justice, the Presidents of the Judicial Council, the Governor and vice-Governor of the Central Banks, and the U.S. Ambassadors, in both countries. In addition, meetings were arranged with local business leaders and international litigation and arbitration lawyers.

The delegation was part of the ABA’s Section’s initiative to deepen their ties to the Bar in the Middle East and broaden awareness of the Section’s wide-ranging work and mission in that region.

Lahlou has been involved with the ABA’s Middle East Committee since 2007 and was appointed co-chair in 2010.

Chaffetz Lindsey is currently handling arbitration and litigation matters involving some four states in the Middle East.

July 2010 — Chaffetz Lindsey associate Yasmine Lahlou has been appointed co-chair of the Middle East Committee of the International Section of the American Bar Association. Yasmine assumes her new role effective August 10, 2010, following her successful service as vice-chair since August 2009. Yasmine and other committee leaders focus on developing projects and programs that concern important international legal issues and that enhance committee members’ legal skills, expertise and awareness of ethical issues that can arise in the international sphere. In addition, Yasmine also recently has been appointed as member of the steering group for the International Litigation Committee of the ABA’s International Section.

January 2010 – Chaffetz Lindsey partner James Hosking attended the events surrounding the opening of Maxwell Chambers, the new center for international arbitration in Singapore. The opening events coincided with the 2010 Singapore International Arbitration Forum.

Maxwell Chambers is a state-of-the-art facility for conducting international arbitrations and is also home to the Singapore International Arbitration Centre and the regional office for other leading international arbitration organizations such as the International Chamber of Commerce, International Centre for Dispute Resolution and London Court of International Arbitration. Many prominent Singaporean and international barristers also maintain chambers there.

Singapore plays an increasingly important role as a preferred venue for arbitration of disputes arising throughout Asia. Chaffetz Lindsey is currently representing a client in an arbitration in Singapore under the Singapore International Arbitration Centre rules.
