Chaffetz Lindsey Nominated for Disputes “Deal of the Year” at 2026 Latin Lawyer Awards

May 2026– Chaffetz Lindsey has been shortlisted for Deal of the Year in the Disputes category at the 20th Annual Latin Lawyer Awards, recognizing our role in one of the most significant and complex matters in the Latin American legal market.

Shortlisted with just two other cases, the nomination relates to the firm’s role in securing a landmark victory for The AES Corporation in a long-running investment arbitration against the Republic of Argentina. The dispute arose from Argentina’s sweeping regulatory changes to its electricity sector following the country’s 2001–2002 economic crisis, which undermined the legal and economic framework governing its investments.

After more than two decades of proceedings, an arbitral tribunal constituted under the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) ruled decisively in AES’s favor, awarding over US$700 million in damages (now worth US$830 million). The tribunal found that Argentina’s measures—including tariff freezes, changes to remuneration systems, and mandatory reinvestment requirements—breached its obligations under the U.S.–Argentina bilateral investment treaty by fundamentally altering the conditions under which AES had invested. Aníbal Sabater Appointed to the Inaugural AIAC Court of Arbitration

March 2026– Chaffetz Linsey’s Aníbal Sabater has been appointed as an inaugural member of the Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC) Court of Arbitration — a cornerstone in the newly reformed ADR framework that reinforces the AIAC’s mission to uphold excellence in international arbitration.

The AIAC Court, which was established under recent Malaysian ADR reforms to succeed the Kuala Lumpur International Arbitration Center, comprises a distinguished group of global arbitration practitioners committed to administering disputes with the highest standards of neutrality, independence, and efficiency. In this new role, Aníbal will contribute his expertise and independent judgment to support the effective administration of cases at the Asian International Arbitration Centre. He will work alongside fellow members to help ensure proceedings are conducted with fairness, neutrality, and efficiency, in line with the highest international standards.

This appointment underscores his deep expertise in international commercial and investment arbitration, built over nearly three decades advising and adjudicating complex cross-border disputes under the world’s leading institutional rules.

James Hosking Elected to the DIS German Arbitration Council

March 2026– Chaffetz Lindsey’s James Hosking has been appointed as a member of the Arbitration Council of the German Arbitration Institute (DIS).

The German Arbitration Institute, or Deutsche Institution für Schiedsgerichtsbarkeit (DIS), is one of Europe’s preeminent arbitration institutions.  The DIS administers arbitration proceedings, oversees its arbitration rules, supports the conduct of arbitration proceedings and generally promotes use of alternative dispute resolution.

The DIS Arbitration Council is an independent body within the DIS that ensures the quality and efficiency of arbitration proceedings. It  performs key administrative functions as provided in the DIS Arbitration Rules, such as appointing arbitrators, deciding on challenges to arbitrators, and ensuring quality of the DIS arbitration process.  The Council plays a central role in shaping institutional arbitration practice and governance in Germany.
