James Hosking Speaks at 2025 iLaw Conference

January 2025—James Hosking will moderate a session at the upcoming 2025 iLaw Conference taking place on February 7th in Miami, Florida. The session “Investment Arbitration Reports and Updates” will discuss developments in U.S. law relating to the enforcement of investor state awards and feature reports on latest developments from ICSID and the U.S. Department of State.

Speakers include Martina Polasek (Secretary-General, ICSID), John D. Daley (Deputy Assistant Legal Adviser for International Claims and Investment Disputes, U.S. Department of State), and Carlos Ramos-Mrosovsky (BakerHostetler).

Andy Frischknecht to Speak on Award Enforcement at Informa Asset Recovery International Conference in Dublin

February 2025—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Andy Frischknecht  will join the Informa Asset Recovery International Conference taking place February 5th-February 7th in Dublin, Ireland. Andy, along with Thomas Eymond-Laritaz (Highgate), Maciej Durbas (Kubas Kos Galkowski), and Cristina Lopez (Lovill), will sit on the panel “Full Steam Ahead or Slowly Does It – Is Enforcing Arbitration Awards the Easiest Enforcement Route?” on Thursday, February 6th.

The group will discuss whether the current award enforcement system works, key challenges across different jurisdictions, how award debtors can delay enforcement, and how award creditors can implement international strategies to ensure prompt enforcement and repayment.

Caline Mouawad Joins Columbia Arbitration Day 2025

January 2025— Chaffetz Lindsey’s Caline Mouawad will join Columbia Arbitration Day on January 31st in New York City. Caline will sit on the panel “Arbitration in Conflict Zones” with Guled Yusuf (A&O Shearman), Felipe Nazar (Pérez-Llorca), and Eric Ives (U.S. Department of Commerce). The discussion will be moderated by Rahim Moloo.

The group will examine the potential of arbitration as a crucial mechanism to address the gaps left by dysfunctional or inaccessible courts in regions affected by geopolitical instability. It will also explore the impact of conflicts on investment and commercial arbitration proceedings and the unique challenges of enforcing arbitral awards in such contexts, including under the New York Convention and the ICSID Convention.

Anibal Sabater Joins NYIAC Talks Podcast Spotlight on International Arbitration in Latin America: Mexico

January 2025—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Anibal Sabater will host an upcoming NYIAC Talks podcast with Noiana Marigo (Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer) on Friday, January 31st.

Anibal and Noiana will join guest Cecilia Azar (Galicia Abogados) to discuss recent legal reforms in Mexico and their relevance to arbitration. In the 45-minute session, they will cover topics including an introduction to Mexico’s constitutional reform, the state of arbitration in Mexico, and the broader U.S.-Mexico relationship.

Gretta Walters to Join Swedish Arbitration Days in Stockholm

January 2025—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Gretta Walters will speak at the upcoming 2025 Swedish Arbitration Days taking place in Stockholm, Sweden January 23rd– January 24th. The biannual event brings together leading arbitration professionals from around the world and features six panels of prominent legal practitioners discussing the topic “Information in Arbitration” from different angles, all relevant to the practice of international arbitration.

Gretta will join Rikard Wikström-Hermansen (Independent Arbitrator) for the session titled “Can you HIDE the information?” Gretta and Rikard will debate whether remaining silent is an option when disclosing everything may not be in the best interest of your case.  The debate will consider common and civil law differences to disclosure and will examine thorny document production issues in international arbitration.

Caline Mouawad Moderates Panel at ITA-IEL-ICC Joint Conference on International Energy Arbitration

January 2025—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Caline Mouawad will moderate the panel “The Rising Importance of ESG and its Impact on International Arbitration and Supply Chains” at the ITA-IEL-ICC Joint Conference on International Energy Arbitration taking place January 16th-January 17th in Houston, Texas.

Caline will be joined by Cristián Conejero (Cuatrecasas), Laura Houët (CMS) and Kirsten Odynski (White & Case LLP) to discuss recent developments and trends in the resolution of ESG disputes and how corporates can best manage ESG risks, including through their supply chains and commercial contracts.

December 2024— Chaffetz Lindsey’s Charlie Scibetta participated on the panel “Coverage Trends Related to Emerging Public Nuisance Claims” on Friday, December 6th as part of the DRI 2024 Insurance Coverage and Practice Symposium in New York City. Charlie joined Nathalie Dean (AIG) and Christopher St. Jeanos (Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP) for a discussion on the various coverage challenges that have been raised in recent public nuisance claims.

Andy Frischknecht to speak at NYSBA Commercial Litigation Academy

December 2024—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Andy Frischknecht will join a New York panel discussion of “Venue Decisions: State Court v. Federal Court v. Arbitration” as part of the New York State Bar Association’s Commercial Litigation Academy CLE program on December 4th, 2024.

Andy will join moderator Stephen Younger (Withers Bergman LLP) and panelists Jovana Crncevic (Withers Bergman LLP) and Matthew Maron (Deputy General Counsel, One Zero Capital) to discuss the availability, unique characteristics and key tools of state court and federal court litigation as well as arbitration.

Gretta Walters Judges Cross Examination Moot Finals in Paris

November 2024—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Gretta Walters participated as a judge for the Cross Examination Moot final hearing in Paris on Wednesday, November 20th.

The 2024 mock case concerns a dispute over the coding of software for the life sciences industry, including accusations of improperly using and misappropriating intellectual property rights. Chaffetz Lindsey, along with the International Centre for Dispute Resolution (AAA/ICDR) and Compass Lexecon was responsible for drafting the case.

The Moot is a project organized by a group of practitioners and academics with a view of contributing to the education of the next generation of arbitration lawyers. The competition challenges university teams from around the globe to showcase their mastery in international arbitration.

Alan Lipkin and Charlie Scibetta Speak at 2024 Fall ARIAS U.S. Conference

November 2024—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Alan Lipkin and Charlie Scibetta participated in the Friday morning panel “A Roundup on Mass Tort Claims” as part of the ARIAS U.S. 2024 Fall Conference November 14th-15th in New York City.

The panel presentation provided expert perspectives from the front line of direct insurance claims, as well as information on how bankruptcy issues can come into play in these matters. They addressed emerging coverage and bankruptcy issues in a series of large products and/or nuisance related claims such as EtO, PFAS, Climate Change, Opioids, lead, and others.

Alan and Charlie joined (Patricia Santelle, White & Williams LLP, Panelist) and Steve Rosenstein (AIG, Moderator) for the discussion.

Caline Mouawad to Speak at 2024 New York Arbitration Week

November 2024—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Caline Mouawad will join the New York Arbitration Week panel “Life in the Fast Lane: Making Expedited Arbitration Work for You” on Wednesday, November 20th.

Additional speakers include Paul Di Pietro (ICC International Court of Arbitration), Carlos Ramos- Mrosovsky (BakerHostetler) and Guilherme Recena Costa (Barrick Gold Corporation). The discussion will be moderated by Isabel Fernández de la Cuesta (Independent International Arbitrator & Counsel).

Panelists will discuss how parties and arbitrators are designing procedural frameworks under the ICC Expedited Procedure Provisions (EPP) and share best practices. This panel will also explore the evolution of expedited procedures, why parties are—and are not—opting for expedited procedures, and where expedited procedures may see increased use in the future.

James will join Amr Abbas (Matouk Bassiouny & Hennawy), Sara Koleilat-Aranjo (Morgan Lewis) Ben Cowling (Clyde & Co) and Lily Khoury (Steptoe). Amal Bouchenaki (Herbert Smith Freehills LLP) will moderate the discussion. Key topics of conversation will include:

  • Are giga project arbitrations here?
  • Key substantive issues most recently arbitrated in the construction and energy sectors
  • Updates on investor-state arbitration involving the construction sector in the MENA region
  • MENA arbitral institutions
