Aníbal Sabater and Yasmine Lahlou to Serve as Faculty at the 2021 ABA’s Section of International Law Arbitration Skills Masterclass

April 2021 – On May 5th – 6th, Aníbal Sabater and Yasmine Lahlou will each speak at the ABA’s Section of International Law Arbitration Skills Masterclass, a hands-on training program designed to help students and practitioners develop arbitral skills. During the two-day virtual conference, each participant will have the opportunity to learn and practice the best methods, techniques and dos and don’ts for conducting a merits hearing, plus conduct cross-examination and re-direct examination of witnesses (‘played’ by law school students) and experts (‘played’ by damages experts from prominent consultancy firms).

In addition to the practice and feedback sessions, Aníbal and Yasmine will also participate in panel discussions. On Wednesday, May 5th (11:30am – 12:30pm EST) Aníbal is speaking on a panel about “Plenary Presentation on Cross-Examining and Redirecting Fact Witnesses.” On Thursday, May 6th (9:00am – 9:30am EST) Yasmine is moderating a panel discussion titled, “Plenary Presentation on Cross-Examining and Redirecting Expert Witnesses.”

Aníbal Sabater to Speak about E-Discovery at the Hispanic National Bar Association’s Corporate Counsel Conference

March 2021 – On Wednesday, March 17th, Aníbal Sabater will participate in a panel discussion titled “E-Discovery in International and Domestic Arbitration v. E-Discovery in Court” at the 2021 Hispanic National Bar Association’s Corporate Counsel Conference. Aníbal will join panelists Hon. Ariel Belen (JAMS), Dawson Horn (AIG), Katherine Coba (Boyd Richards) and Michael Fernandez (Winston & Strawn) to explore the different approaches courts and arbitral providers are taking to e-discovery and share practical tips for effective and efficient e-discovery.  The panel will also discuss recent circuit split on 28 U.S.C. 1782 and the effect on e-Discovery in private International commercial arbitrations.

Rainbow Willard Re-elected as Secretary to the Board of NYIAC

January 2021 – Earlier this month, Rainbow Willard was re-elected as Secretary to the Board for the New York International Arbitration Center (NYIAC). This marks the second full year that Rainbow will serve in the role.  Chaffetz Lindsey has maintained an active relationship with NYIAC since the organization’s founding in 2013. Just in the past few years, Rainbow and Gretta Walters led a discussion about diversity during NYIAC’s inaugural New York Arbitration Week, Aníbal Sabater and NYIAC co-hosted a 3-episode podcast series about international arbitration in Latin America and the firm sponsored the 2020 New York Arbitration Week, where Caline Mouawad led two panel discussions about diversity in arbitration and a mock U.S. Supreme Court argument about section 1782. Additionally, Aníbal Sabater currently serves on NYIAC’s Board as a Director and is a Member of the Nominating Committee.  Aníbal previously served on NYIAC’s Executive Committee.

Aníbal Sabater to Moderate Discussions About Connecting with Clients at UIA Webinar Series

January 2021 – On February 16th and 17th, the International Association of Lawyers (UIA) will host a two-day webinar series on “Networking, Marketing, and Attracting Clients in Times of Pandemic.” The webinars will feature in-house lawyers and marketing experts who will discuss how lawyers can develop and stay connected to clients in times where in person interaction continues to be limited for the foreseeable future.

Aníbal Sabater will act as moderator for two webinars:

December 2020 – On Thursday, December 3rd, Aníbal Sabater will be the featured guest speaker on “Arbitration Coffee Breaks: Episode 4” hosted by Madrid Very Young Arbitration Practitioners (MAD VYAP) and Mexico City Very Young Arbitration Practitioners (MX VYAP). Aníbal will be joined by Begoña Charro de Mendieta, associate at Pinsent Masons (Madrid) to discuss his career path as a lawyer and share tips about his international arbitration experience in the US.

Anibal Sabater Appointed President of the UIA Future Lawyer Commission

November 2020 – Aníbal Sabater has been appointed president of the International Association of Lawyers (UIA) Commission on “The Future of the Lawyer.” Created in 1927, the UIA is an international non-governmental organization, aimed at promoting the rule of law and the basic principles of the legal profession, as well as to foster legal education through congresses, seminars, working groups, and commission.  It operates in English, French, and Spanish and brings together more than 2,200 lawyers from around the world.  The 150-member Commission on the Future of the Lawyer analyzes the way social, political, and economic changes affect the work of legal professionals.  Its recent focus has been on the effect of the pandemic on the practice of law.

Aníbal has been involved with UIA for several years, for instance speaking at several of its events (the 2019 Congress in Luxembourg, 2016 Congress in Budapest, and more recently at an online session on COVID-19’s influence on the development of lawyers’ activity). Chaffetz Lindsey partner Andrew Poplinger also spoke about COVID-19’s impact on International Arbitration at a UIA webinar in May. Chaffetz Lindsey’s partner Yasmine Lahlou and counsel Rainbow Willard also collaborate on a variety of UIA projects.

Anibal Sabater to Speak About Arbitration in Complex Contracts

September 2020 – On Wednesday, September 16th, Anibal Sabater will participate in an online panel discussion about “Arbitration in Complex Contracts.” Panelists will discuss multi-party and multi-contract arbitrations, the cost and time investment of efficiently handling the arbitration and unforeseen circumstances when dealing with complex contract arbitrations.

Anibal Sabater Published in “Surviving in the Field of International Arbitration: War Stories and Lessons Learned”

September 2020 – Anibal Sabater recently contributed a chapter on “The Decalogue to Work with Cocounsel” in Wolters Kluwer’s “Surviving in the Field of International Arbitration: War Stories and Lessons Learned (English & Spanish Bilingual Book).” The book, edited by José María de la Jara, Carolina Arroyo, Álvaro Awad, offers a comprehensive description of what happens behind the scenes in the international arbitration world.

Anibal, along with other renowned names in arbitration offer their reflections on life as an arbitration practitioner, highlighting career opportunities and potential stumbling blocks. Specifically, his contribution offers insights and tips from his experience working with co-co-counsel in various cases throughout his career.
