Yasmine Lahlou to Speak at Roma Tre University’s Certificate on International Commercial and Investment Arbitration

July 2016 – Aníbal Sabater recently moderated the New York Arbitration Center’s Grand Central Forum and interviewed Gary Born, who is president of SIAC and head of international arbitration at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr. Claudia Salomon of Latham & Watkins also participated in the discussion. Global Arbitration Review has summarized that interview in an article called “Game of Tribunals,” a clever play on Born’s references to Game of Thrones.

Born addressed a range of topics from the continuing importance of the seat of arbitration to the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales’s recent comments proposing more judicial review of cases and the criticisms that face investor-state dispute settlement. He contends that international arbitration has enjoyed “a long golden summer when everything went right” but “winter is coming,” and as such the community needs to defend it more vigorously.

July 2016 – Chaffetz Lindsey partner Aníbal Sabater will be speaking in a roundtable discussion being hosted by the ABA’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee and the Arbitration Subcommittee on Monday, July 18, 2016 from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm Eastern.  Aníbal will be joined by other experienced arbitration practitioners Lawrence S. Schaner (Jenner & Block LLP) and Charlene C. Sun (King & Spalding LLP) to discuss how parties and their counsel can help to structure and manage arbitrations in ways that are more efficient and more responsive to the clients’ needs, including through the use of a number of recommended guidelines and recently revised arbitration rules.  C. Ryan Reetz (Bryan Cave LLP) will serve as the moderator.

Aníbal is an international arbitration specialist with over 18 years of experience, representing clients from around the world and industries as diverse as construction, energy, mining, shipping, technology, and telecommunications, in arbitrations under all major international arbitration rules, including AAA/ICDR, ICC, LCIA, and UNCITRAL. May 2016 – Gretta Walters will be moderating a panel at the Co-Chairs’ Circle Second Global Conference in Helsinki on May 27th.  The panel will discuss to what extent parties and counsel involved in an arbitration can have an obligation to disclose hidden information relevant to the outcome.

This year’s conference, Controversy in International Arbitration, is hosted by Young Arbitration Club Finland and jointly organized by 19 young arbitration practitioners’ organizations.

 

 

May 2016 – The New York International Arbitration Center (NYIAC) will be hosting its Second Annual Grand Central Forum on May 18th, 2016 from 5pm to 9pm.  The NYIAC Board of Directors has established the Judith S. Kaye Arbitration Lecture, to be given annually in conjunction with the Grand Central Forum, in memory of the Hon. Judith S. Kaye, a visionary leader in New York’s legal community who passed away in January.  In addition to her 25 years of service on the New York Court of Appeals, Judge Kaye was the Founding Chair of NYIAC, to which she brought her characteristic dedication and verve.  This year, the Judith S. Kaye Arbitration Lecture will feature Gary Born, Chair of the International Arbitration Practice Group at Wilmer Hale, in the format of a conversation with Chaffetz Lindsey partner Aníbal Sabater (NYIAC’s Program Committee Chair) and Claudia Salomon (Latham & Watkins LLP).  The conversation will cover topics such as: When (if ever) should annulled awards be enforced?; Is “manifest disregard of the law” a viable ground for annulment? Should calls from the English judiciary for enhanced review of arbitration be heeded?  Are criticisms of investor-state arbitration well founded?

The Lecture will be preceded by a panel of experts from around the world who will debate the question, “Is There a U.S. Culture of International Arbitration”? The panel, moderated by Caline Mouawad (King & Spalding LLP), will include Jalal El Ahdab (Ginestie Magellan Paley-Vincent), Claudia Frutos-Peterson (Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle LLP), Gregory Litt (Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP), and Eloïse Obadia (Derains & Gharavi).

April 2016 – James Hosking and Gretta Walters will be speaking on a webinar hosted by the American Arbitration Association on Monday, April 18, 2016, from 12pm to 1pm. The webinar is titled “The ICDR’s International Arbitration Rules: Assessing the Impact of the 2014 Amendments.”

DESCRIPTION
The International Centre for Dispute Resolution was launched in 1996 as the international arm of the American Arbitration Association and provides administrative services—including arbitration and mediation—for international disputes. For arbitrations in the international context, the ICDR applies any one of several sets of rules and procedures, foremost of which are the ICDR Rules, part of the ICDR’s International Dispute Resolution Procedures.

Effective June 1, 2014, the ICDR amended its International Rules. Nearly two years later, arbitrators, practitioners and corporate users should be aware of the ongoing implications of the changes.

This 60-minute webinar will examine the amendments to the Rules, why they were made, and how they have been applied in practice since their implementation.

Some of the areas that will be covered include the following:

• Key changes to the Rules (expedited procedures, mediation, joinder and consolidation, enhanced arbitrator powers, exchanges of information);
• Practical implications of the changes;
• How the changes compare to recent amendments in other arbitration rules;

March 2016 – The Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (SCC) is hosting The Stockholm Pre-Moot, taking place March 11-13 , which is a preparation for the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Vienna. Jointly organized by the SCC, Stockholm University, and Mannheimer Swartling, a number of prominent speakers will be in attendance, including Mr. Stefan Kröll, Director of the Willem C. Vis Arbitration Moot in Wien, and Prof. Jan Ramberg, Professor.
