Caline Mouawad Represents Artist Sara Ouhaddou in Public Art Project Honoring New York’s Little Syria

May 2026— Chaffetz Lindsey celebrates French-Moroccan artist Sara Ouhaddou in connection with her new permanent public artwork “Al Qalam:  Poets in the Park.”  Partner Caline Mouawad has steadfastly provided Sara pro bono representation since 2017, when Sara was selected for this project through an international competition.

Sponsored by the Washington Street Historical Society, the vibrant art installation was recently inaugurated to commemorate the historic “Little Syria” neighborhood—once home to New York’s first Arabic-speaking immigrant community from Lebanon and Syria in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Located in the Financial District, the work celebrates the literary contributions of early Arab-American poets and writers, featuring Sara’s abstract calligraphy based on Arabic script and traditional Middle Eastern architectural forms.

For almost a decade, Caline’s role extended well beyond traditional legal counsel. She served as a trusted advisor throughout the project’s development, helping Sara navigate complex legal and administrative processes while ensuring that her artistic vision and voice remained central at every stage. As a native French speaker, Caline was able to work closely with Sara in her preferred language as the project evolved.

According to Sara, “Caline’s support throughout this journey has been invaluable. Her legal expertise was indispensable, and I truly do not think I could have made it through this process without her. Her generosity, guidance, and unwavering human support have been a true compass for me over the past decade.”

Caline also valued the experience. “Sara is an incredible artist, and it has been a privilege to accompany her on this project for nearly a decade. Her artwork soulfully captures the universal themes of identity, community, diaspora, and heritage. As a Lebanese immigrant to the United States myself, I feel a deep personal connection to her work and to the history it honors,” said Caline.

The installation’s unveiling coincided with both National Arab American Heritage Month and National Poetry Month, underscoring the project’s celebration of language, history, and community. The monument brings renewed visibility to a largely forgotten chapter of New York’s past while offering a powerful reflection on the enduring contributions of Arab Americans.

The ICC Institute of World Business Law is a think-tank providing research, training and information to the legal profession concerned with the development of international business law. Through a network of members, the ICC Institute of World Business Law is a forum for all practitioners interested in the practice, study and development of international business law, including international arbitration.  The Council is the ICC Institute’s governing body and now comprises 50 distinguished lawyers, academics and in-house counsel who collaborate to develop the Institute’s strategy, policy, and program of activities.

Caline Mouawad to Moderate “Trump 2.0: Turbulence and Trade” Panel on Emerging Arbitration Challenges

Chaffetz Lindsey Secures Resounding Victory for AES in Investment Arbitration Against Argentina

August 2025 – New York, NY – In a landmark decision in favor of The AES Corporation (AES), an international tribunal has awarded the company over US$730 million in an ICSID arbitration against the Republic of Argentina. In its May 30, 2025 award (recently made public), the Tribunal unanimously held the Republic of Argentina liable under the Argentine–U.S. Bilateral Investment Treaty for unlawful and arbitrary interference with AES’s investments in eight power generation facilities. For the Chaffetz Lindsey team, this a significant victory for a longstanding client.

The Tribunal found that Argentina’s measures—including dismantling the electricity sector’s remuneration system, withholding owed receivables, and coercing AES’s subsidiaries to reinvest those receivables in new infrastructure—arbitrarily altered the essential characteristics of the electricity generation framework. These actions constituted violations of Argentina’s treaty obligations. The Tribunal also rejected all of Argentina’s jurisdictional and admissibility objections. As of the date of AES’s petition to confirm the award, Argentina owed US$821,070,619.71, including damages (to date), interest, and arbitration costs, making it the largest award rendered in any of the more than 60 ICSID arbitrations brought against Argentina following the 2001–2002 economic crisis.

“This case is deeply meaningful to our firm,” said James Hosking, Chaffetz Lindsey founding partner and head of the international arbitration practice. “AES entrusted us with this dispute from the moment we launched the firm in 2009. After helping the client navigate a decade-long suspension in which Argentina had promised to implement sector reforms, we were proud to resume the arbitration in 2018 and to deliver this result alongside our good friends at Freshfields and Bruchou.”

The Spanish-English bilingual merits hearing took place in 2023. The Chaffetz Lindsey team was led by partners James Hosking, Aníbal Sabater, and Caline Mouawad, with support from Matilde Flores, May Khoury, Silvia Marroquín, and Agustina Alfaro. Partner Andreas Frischknecht is now leading, as co-counsel with Freshfields, an action to enforce the award in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

Success in the AES case comes on the heels of a series of other recent investment arbitration wins for the firm, including in the case of APM Terminals Callao S.A. v. Republic of Peru and Clorox Spain S.L v. Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

Caline Mouawad to Speak at ICC Coffee Hour on Corruption “Red Flags” in Arbitration

June 2025– Chaffetz Lindsey’s Caline Mouawad will be featured as a key speaker at the upcoming ICC-hosted “Coffee Hour” in New York City on Tuesday, June 17th.

The event, “Red Flags or Other Indicators of Corruption in International Arbitration,” is the third session in the ICC Commission on Arbitration & ADR’s series, focused on the recently published guidance from the ICC Task Force on corruption in arbitration.

Caline, former Vice-Chair of the ICC Steering Committee on Corruption, will join Lucinda Low, lead author of the ICC red flags document, for an interactive roundtable discussion. Together, they’ll explore:

  • Identifying early warning signs of corruption in arbitration
  • How arbitrators and counsel should respond when corruption may be present

Caline Mouawad Represents New York in Paris Arbitration Week “Battle of the Seats”

April 2025—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Caline Mouawad will join a “Battle of the Seats” between London, Paris, New York, and California during Paris Arbitration Week taking place April 7th– April 11th.

The group will explore the comparative advantages and disadvantages of four of the world’s leading arbitration seats through a lively discussion. Caline, representing New York, will join Laura Abrahamson (Arbitrator) representing California, Kevin Nash (London Court of International Arbitration) representing London, and Alexis Mourre (MCL Arbitration) representing Paris.

Representatives from each jurisdiction will advocate for their seat in a debate-style contest that will feature questions about procedural efficiency, enforceability, and other advantages or disadvantages that each seat may pose, including recent developments in case law and institutional rules. This session will help arbitration practitioners, in-house counsel, and other decision-makers understand the practical implications of selecting these places as their seat, and will pit new against old as the participants have the opportunity to vote for their preferred seat at the end.
