September 2020 – Yasmine Lahlou and Caline Mouawad have been recognized by Latinvex’s 2020 rankings of “Latin America’s Top 100 Female Lawyers.” This marks the third year in a row that Yasmine has been individually recognized by Latinvex and the second consecutive year for Caline.

Latinvex’s editorial staff selects the top 100 female lawyers specializing in Latin America among international law firms. 100 attorneys from 61 different firms were selected in 14 categories, some of which are Arbitration & Litigation, Banking & Finance, Capital Markets, Corporate/M&A, Energy, FCPA & Fraud and Project Finance.

Legal 500 USA Recognizes Chaffetz Lindsey for Insurance and International Arbitration Disputes

June 2020 – Legal 500’s 2020 USA rankings are out—Chaffetz Lindsey is once again the only New York-based boutique recognized for both International Arbitration and Insurance disputes. Legal 500 interviewees comment, “Chaffetz Lindsey is a unique firm as it is a boutique, with advantages which a boutique firm can offer in terms of arrangements, but which is still fully capable to provide excellent legal representation with an experienced team of lawyers.”

Yasmine Lahlou Elected to the Board of Directors of ArbitralWomen

June 2020 – On June 16, 2020, Yasmine Lahlou was elected to the 2020 – 2022 Board of Directors of ArbitralWomen. Yasmine is one of twenty candidates elected to the Board. Over the past few years, Yasmine has spoken at several ArbitralWomen events, including the organization’s 2019 annual conference in Berlin. Chaffetz Linsdey has also been a proud supporter of ArbitralWomen over the years, most recently hosting the organization’s Annual General Meeting in January.

Chaffetz Lindsey Wins Enforcement of $26 Million Arbitral Award Against Kyrgyz Republic

April 2020 – On April 22, 2020, a federal district court in the District of Columbia granted our petition on behalf of Turkish-based Entes Industrial Plants Construction & Erection Contracting Co. to enforce an arbitral award for over $26 million (including interest) against the Kyrgyz Republic.  The award resulted from a Bishkek-seated UNCITRAL arbitration chaired by Michael E. Schneider.

Previously, in October 2019, the District Court had granted our petition to confirm the award against the named debtor, the Kyrgyz Ministry of Transport and Communications.  In its second decision, the court now found that the Republic “properly [could] be held liable for the actions taken and the money owed by the Ministry.”  More specifically, the court ruled that the Ministry was not entitled to a presumption of separateness under the United States Supreme Court’s decision in First National City Bank v. Banco Para El Comercio Exterior de Cuba, 462 U.S. 611 (1983), and that an agency relationship existed between the Republic and the Ministry.

The Chaffetz Lindsey team was led by Andreas Frischknecht and included Ted Debonis, Lilian Marques, Marcel Cardoso and Luke Muhammad.

Gretta Walters Named to ICDR Y&I’s Executive Board

February 2020 – Gretta Walters has been selected to serve as a member of the Executive Board of the ICDR’s Y&I. February 2020 – Chambers & Partners has released its 2020 Global Guide and recognized Chaffetz Lindsey’s International Arbitration practice. This marks the second year in a row that the firm’s International Arbitration practice has been listed in the global rankings. The practice is consistently ranked in Chambers USA and Chambers Latin America. David Lindsey and Anibal Sabater continue to be individually recognized as well.

Gerard Bifulco Honored by the City Justice Bar Center

October 2019 – Gerard Bifulco was recently honored at the 11th annual City Bar Justice Center (CBJC) 2019 Jeremy G. Epstein Awards for Outstanding Pro Bono Service. Gerard was nominated by the director of the CBJC’s Eastern District of New York Federal Pro Se Legal Assistance Project, who recognized Gerard as the “most outstanding volunteer for the project because of his commitment to the project and its clients, quality and volume of legal work, willingness to take on challenging assignments, and leadership in support of pro bono.”

The City Bar Justice Center is the pro bono affiliate of the New York City Bar Association. Its Federal Pro Se Legal Assistance Project provides free, unbundled legal services to pro se litigants who cannot afford to hire an attorney.
