November 2021 – Together with Sergey Petrachkov of ALRUD, Chaffetz Lindsey partner Andy Frischknecht recently co-moderated a session on International Treaties at the Forum on International Enforcement of Judgments and Awards in the UK.  At this first in-person forum since the start of the pandemic, a group of leading practitioners from key jurisdictions convened to discuss recent trends and hot topics in the field of judgment and award enforcement and asset recovery.  Andy’s session focused on practical issues such as service of process, cross-border evidence gathering and the anticipated impact of the latest Hague Conventions designed to facilitate the enforcement of foreign judgments.

Aníbal Sabater to Speak at 2021 New York Arbitration Week

November 2021 –The second annual New York Arbitration Week (NYAW), a joint event led by the New York International Arbitration Center (NYIAC) and the New York Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArbNY), is taking place virtually November 16th through 20th.  Chaffetz Lindsey’s Aníbal Sabater will speak on Tuesday, November 16th at 9am on a panel to discussion about “The Competition: International Arbitration, International Commercial Courts and the Singapore Convention.” Businesses facing international disputes have an increasing range of options beyond arbitration with the rise of international commercial courts and the increasing prominence of mediation following the launch of the Singapore Convention. The panel will examine and explore what such competition might mean for the future of international arbitration and the role arbitral institutions may play to preserve and progress the utility of arbitration in an increasingly crowded dispute resolution marketplace.  Topics for discussion include the relationship between commercial courts and international arbitration, effect of the Singapore Convention on international arbitration, and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on each of these dispute resolution mechanisms.  Aníbal’s co-panelists include Professor Lawrence Boo (National University of Singapore, Singapore), Toby Landau QC (Counsel and Arbitrator, Duxton Hill Chambers); Lucy Reed (Independent Arbitrator, Arbitration Chambers); Dr. S.I. Marcel Engholm Cardoso Moderates ICDR Y&I Webinar on “Identifying the Law Applicable to the Arbitration Agreement”

November 2021 – On Thursday, November 11th, ICDR Young and International (Y&I) will be hosting two virtual panel discussions on the law applicable to the arbitration agreement, topics that are the subject of this year’s Vis Moot problem. The panels will discuss how to determine which jurisdiction’s law should apply and how different laws (i.e., substantive laws, procedural laws, specialized laws (such as the CISG)) can or should apply to interpret an arbitration agreement.  Chaffetz Lindsey’s Marcel Engholm Cardoso – along with Jessica Beess und Chrostin (King and Spalding) – will moderate esteemed panels that include: Maxi Scherer (Wilmer Hale, London); Patricia Shaughnessy (Stockholm University, Stockholm); Joseph Schwartz (WAGNER Arbitration, Berlin); Dana MacGrath (MacGrath Arbitration, New York); Franco Ferrari (New York University, New York); Samantha J. Aníbal Sabater to Moderate UIA Panel on the Pandemic’s Impact on Law Firm Management

October 2021 — The 2021 UIA Union Internationale des Avocats Congress is currently taking place in Madrid through Saturday in a hybrid format of in-person and virtual attendance.  Join Chaffetz Lindsey Partner Aníbal Sabater, who is President of “The Commission on The Future of the Lawyer,” as he co-moderates a panel on the “Impact of the Pandemic on the Management of Law Firms and the Practice of Law” this Saturday, October 30th, from 5pm to 7pm CEST (Madrid) with Commission’s Vice-President Nadia Darwazeh (Clyde & Co).

Lidia Rezende Moderates #YoungITATalks: “Arbitration & Insolvency: When Theory Meets Practice”

October 2021 – On Friday, October 22, Young ITA will host a webinar titled, “#YoungITATalks: Arbitration & Insolvency: When Theory Meets Practice” as part of the São Paulo Arbitration Week.  Young ITA’s regional leaders for Brazil and North America will lead a discussion on the use of arbitration in the context of bankruptcies, corporate restructurings, and other scenarios related to corporate insolvency and financial distress. In a roundtable format, we will discuss practical issues that arise at the intersection of insolvency and arbitration, from both the Brazilian and the U.S. law perspectives, as well as recent developments in the area (including the new IBA Toolkit on Insolvency and Arbitration and the new Brazilian Bankruptcy Act).

ENERAP Launches NY Chapter with Oct 19th Webinar on Global Energy Market and Regulatory Impact on NY Practitioners

2021 NYIAC Annual Grand Central Forum Features James Hosking as Speaker

September 2021 – The New York International Arbitration Center will be hosting its Annual Grand Central Forum on Monday, October 4th from 12:30pm to 2pm EST.  Before an international arbitration tribunal is confirmed, counsel has a choice between seeking provisional measures from an emergency arbitrator or a judge.  What strategic considerations should guide counsel’s analysis in choosing the most appropriate route?  Are the same provisional measures available from an emergency arbitrator and a judge?  Under what standard?  How expedited is the process?  How enforceable is the order granting provisional relief?  Grand Central Forum will explore these topics with prominent experts:  a judge and attorneys serving both as counsel and arbitrators.

Gretta Walters to Speak at the 16th ICC New York Conference

September 2021 – On Wednesday, September 22nd, Gretta Walters will participate in a panel discussion titled “2020-21 North American Recap: What You Need to Know” at the 16th ICC New York Conference.
