James Hosking Speaks on Emergency Arbitrator Proceedings at Fordham Law School

November 2019 – On November 22, 2019, James Hosking led a panel discussion at the ICC International Court of Arbitration Breakfast Program at Fordham University. The presentation was about the recently released ICC Commission Report on Emergency Arbitrator Proceedings, which offers insights on the first 80 EA cases under the ICC rules, by identifying emerging trends and collating practical tips to facilitate the use of EA proceedings. James is co-chair of the Task Force on Emergency Arbitrator Proceedings that produced the report.

The breakfast seminar immediately precedes the Fordham Conference on International Arbitration and Mediation, which is part of New York Arbitration Week.

Yasmine Lahlou to speak at the BVI International Arbitration Conference

November 2019 – On Thursday, November 21, Yasmine Lahlou will participate in a panel discussion at the 3rd Annual BVI International Arbitration Conference. She will join other panelists to discuss, “International Commercial Arbitration in an Era of Retreating Globalism.”

Since becoming an international arbitration jurisdiction just a few years ago, BVI has positioned the territory to become a leading arbitration hub across the Americas and the Caribbean. The BVI International Arbitration Conference 2019 is themed “Arbitration 2.0,” and will explore how arbitration has come of age both in BVI and across the globe.

Gretta Walters and Rainbow Willard to Speak About Diversity at New York Arbitration Week

November 2019 – On Wednesday, November 20th, Gretta Walters and Rainbow Willard will participate in a panel discussion titled, “Diversity Challenge: Reinventing the Landscape for Young IA Practitioners.” Panel participants will examine the state of diversity in international arbitration, define diversity in a changing world and strategize tips and tools to move the needle measurably forward. The event is hosted by the New York International Arbitration Center (NYIAC) and various young arbitration groups, including the American Arbitration Association-International Centre for Dispute Resolution’s Young & International (AAA-ICDR’s Y&I) and Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Young Members Group (CIArb YMG), where Gretta and Rainbow hold leadership positions, respectively.

The event is part of New York’s inaugural Arbitration Week, which will bring together arbitration advocates, neutrals and academics from New York, the Americas and the broader international community.

 

 

Aníbal Sabater Speaks at Eighth Annual Damages in International Arbitration Conference

November 2019 – On Tuesday, November 19th, Aníbal Sabater is speaking at the Eighth Annual Damages in International Arbitration Conference in New York City. He will serve as a panelist to discuss “Counsel’s Role in the Quantum Phases – Effective Advocacy, Cross-Examination Techniques, the “Hot Tub” and Relations with the Expert – Including related Ethical/Disqualification Issues.”

The Annual Damages in International Arbitration conference provides insights from leading authorities and experts on what should be foremost in the minds of all advocates, experts, arbitrators and the parties that are involved in the international arbitration process.

Anibal Sabater Speaks at the ASIER Congress in Colombia

November 2019 – On Friday, November 15th, Aníbal Sabater will participate in a panel discussion at the XIV Ibero-American Congress of Regulation of ASIER in Medellin, Colombia. The discussion, titled “Judicial Review and Conflict Solution: ASIER’s Perspective,” will feature four panelists who will explore the implementation and impact of arbitration on energy and infrastructure projects in Ibero-American countries. Anibal will specifically focus on arbitration and the limits of state regulation in the industry.

The Ibero-American Association for Regulation Studies (ASIER) is made up of a group of professionals from various Latin American countries, linked to the economic regulation of strategic sectors. The ASIER Congress brings together government regulatory bodies, guilds, public service providers, judges, academic researchers, and professionals from main economic sectors in the Americas and Europe to analyze the regulatory dynamics and needs of public infrastructure and economic and social development in the Ibero-America countries.

 

Rainbow Willard Speaks at CIArb Young Members Group Annual Conference

November 2019 – Rainbow Willard is speaking at Chartered Institute of Arbitrations (CIArb) Young Members Group Annual Conference 2019 in Edinburgh, Scotland. She is moderating a panel discussion on “How to Make Justice Better,” which will focus on if arbitration has become unsuitable for small claims.

With a global network of 16,000 members, CIArb is the world’s leading qualifications and professional body for dispute avoidance and dispute management. The Young Members Group Annual Conference is aimed at practitioners under 40, or students interested in building a career in dispute resolution.

Anibal Sabater Speaks on Multiple Panels in Luxembourg

November 2019 – On Friday, November 8th, Anibal Sabater is speaking on multiple panels at the 63rd International Association of Lawyers Congress (UIA) in Luxembourg.

His first panel discussion is about “Mediation and Arbitration for Businesses along the Belt Road,” hosted by the Law Society of Hong Kong. Anibal will answer questions regarding the newly signed Arrangement between Hong Kong and China and its impact on arbitration for U.S. companies involved in China-related transactions. The discussion will also highlight third-party funding in U.S. arbitrations.

Afterwards, Anibal will participate in the “China Special Session,” which will provide an in-depth interpretation of the latest developments of the Belt & Road Initiative and mediation mechanism, plus share practical experiences of China-related inbound and outbound investments.

Each year, the UIA Congress brings together approximately 1,000 lawyers from around the world to discuss important legal issues. This year’s congress includes 30 working sessions that will focus on innovation in law, and business and human rights.

Erin Valentine Debates at Legal Week’s Commercial Litigation & Arbitration Forum 2019

November 2019 – Erin Valentine is participating in an Oxford-Style debate at the Legal Week Commercial Litigation & Arbitration Forum 2019 in London. The discussion, titled “The Current Systems in the US and UK Kill Access to Justice,” will focus on problems with the current systems in each of their jurisdictions and the weaknesses that can be exploited by unmeritorious litigants. In particular, the panelists will discuss crippling cost orders in the UK versus extremely limited cost sanctions in the US, plus the effectiveness of the Mid Atlantic Solution and abolition of cost recovery.

The Forum is hosted by ALM, publisher of Legal Week and The American Lawyer to provide a platform for the most senior dispute resolution professionals in the UK, US, and Russia to network and engage through open debate, panels, expert speakers, interactive breakout sessions, and an evening drinks reception.

Chaffetz Lindsey Travels to Brazil

October 2019 – On Thursday, October 24th, Yasmine Lahlou participated in a panel discussion about “The Intersection Between Arbitration & Mediation as Dispute Resolution Methods.” The panelists discussed the complements and contrasts of arbitration and mediation, and how they can coexist with respect to the client demands, fees, conflicts, and other topics. The event was hosted by Perlman Vidigal Godoy Advogados in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Earlier in the week, Yasmine and Lidia Rezende attended the VI CAM-CCBC Arbitration Congress in Sao Paulo. Chaffetz Lindsey was proud to sponsor the conference.

CAM-CCBC annually brings together nearly 500 attendees to address the most current challenges faced by arbitration and its trends. With an agenda based on CAM-CCBC administered cases, the Congress aims to encourage the exchange of experiences between professionals of different nationalities, stimulate debate between various agents of international arbitration, promote the city of Sao Paulo as a seat for international arbitrations, and discuss the challenges faced in arbitration today and emerging in the near future.

October 2019 – Yasmine Lahlou is speaking on a panel at the 9th Investment Treaty Arbitration Conference in Prague. She is participating in a panel discussion about “Non-traditional issue in investor-state arbitration.”

The 9th Investment Treaty Arbitration Conference is aimed at sharing experience with treaty arbitration between senior government officials and top legal practitioners in the field. The event is organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Finance of the Czech Republic and hosted by the advisory firm KPMG Czech Republic. The conference is invitation-only.

Yasmine Lahlou Speaks at the 14th ICC New York Conference on International Arbitration

October 2019 – Yasmine Lahlou recently led a discussion on “Protecting legal privileges and commercial confidences” at the 14th ICC New York Conference on International Arbitration. She spoke about issues of privilege and commercial confidence, and how the disparity of regimes makes the outcome uncertain for both counsel and parties. She addressed several key issues, including how to identify and withhold privileged material in practice, how to resist claims of privileges and how to protect commercial confidences, also considering the discretion of the arbitral tribunal on the issue and in the absence of an agreement by the parties. Following the discussion, Yasmine led several case scenarios on the topic.

The annual ICC New York Conference on International Arbitration seeks to create a highly interactive environment and lively debate among arbitrators, legal practitioners, in-house counsel and academics who wish to learn more about developments in international dispute resolution.

 

 

 

James Hosking Speaks at 8th Annual GAR Live New York

October 2019 – GAR Live New York is taking place in downtown New York City today, and Chaffetz Lindsey Founding Partner James Hosking is participating in the Oxford Union style debate session where teams of debaters argue in favor of, or against, a motion. This year’s topic is “This house believes that the increasing standardisation of international arbitration procedure is a positive development.” A panel of judges will then voice opinions on what has been heard, before choosing which side to support and giving reasons for their decisions.  All the participants in today’s debate include:
