Chaffetz Lindsey Hosts ICC Young Arbitrators Forum Event

October 2015 – Chaffetz Lindsey and the ICC Young Arbitrators Forum co-hosted a panel on In Defense of International Commercial Arbitration:  Lessons to be Learned or Ignored from Investor-State Arbitration on September 29th, 2015.  Over 60 people turned out to discuss and debate recent developments in the investor-state dispute resolution system and the impact of these developments on international commercial arbitrations.

Yasmine Lahlou, Partner at Chaffetz Lindsey LLP, provided opening remarks, discussing the recent controversy surrounding the adoption of trade agreements in the U.S, Asian and Pacific countries, and the E.U.  The panel then explored transparency, issue conflict, and corruption issues, as they have arisen in investor-state arbitrations, and offered insight as to how these issues can be addressed in commercial arbitrations.  The panel consisted of Christian Hioureas, Associate at Chadbourne & Park LLP; Aloysius (Louie) Llamzon, Associate at King & Spalding LLP; Ruth Teitelbaum, Senior Associate at Freshfields Bruckhause Deringer LLP; and Gretta Walters as moderator, Associate at Chaffetz Lindsey LLP.

 

August 2015 – The ICC Young Arbitrators Forum (ICC YAF) and ICC Colombia are co-organizing a breakfast discussion on the “Key Aspects of International Arbitration.” The event will take place on August 21, 2015, in Medellín and is supported by Cámara de Comercio de Bogotá, Cámara de Comercio de Medellín para Antioquia, and Camara de Comercio de Cali.

Chaffetz Lindsey partner Aníbal Sabater will be speaking on a panel alongside Santiago Bejarano, Associate (WilmerHale, London); Claudia Benavides Galvis, Partner (Baker & McKenzie; ICC YAF Regional Coordinator for Latin America, Bogota); and Brian Diego Gosis, Foreign Consultant (Gomm & Smith, Miami), to discuss “Aspects International Arbitration, How does it work?”

August 2015 – The Centers of Conciliation and Arbitration Chambers of Commerce of Bogota, Cali and Medellin in Colombia, have united forces to spread, with greater impact, alternative methods of dispute resolution, in order to improve the competitiveness of entrepreneurs and contribute to the pacification of the country.

MASC (Métodos Alternos de Solución de Conflictos) is an organization that aims to bring together the most prominent arbitrators, conciliators and conciliators of these three centers – along with prestigious international experts in the field.  MASC is sponsoring the first International Congress on Alternative Dispute Resolution Methods on August 20 and 21, 2015.

Chaffetz Lindsey partner Aníbal Sabater will be speaking on a panel alongside Eduardo Silva Romero, Partner (Dechert, Paris) and Yves Derains, Partner (Derains & Gharavi, Paris) to discuss internationality criteria in arbitration.

August 2015 – To commemorate the tenth year of the ICC New York Conference, members of the ICC Court and Secretariat, along with world-renowned practitioners, will lead an interactive discussion on the leading questions being asked in international arbitration today. Taking place on September 21, 2015, the conference’s panel sessions will examine the trends that are presently changing the landscape of international dispute resolution. Chaffetz Lindsey partner Aníbal Sabater will speak on a panel called “Emergency Arbitrators: Is this institutional relief fulfilling its promise?” which will address:

• ICC emergency relief: Recent ICC Court experience and new trends since the entry into force of the 2012 Arbitration Rules;
• Choice of forum: Strategic considerations as to whether emergency relief should be sought from institutions or domestic courts; and
• Emergency order and beyond: Relevant standards to grant emergency relief and the enforceability of emergency orders in the face of party non-compliance

The panel will be moderated by Rocío Digón, Managing Director and Counsel, at ICC International Court of Arbitration, SICANA, Inc. June 2015 – Aníbal Sabater, Partner at Chaffetz Lindsey LLP, will be a speaker at the upcoming International Arbitration 2015 Seminar sponsored by Practising Law Institute (PLI). Designed for private practitioners, in-house counsel, and other professionals who are involved in the arbitration of international disputes, this program will address the many ways in which arbitration can offer more choices than litigation.

May 2015 – James Hosking was a panelist at the XI Rio de Janeiro International Arbitration Conference hosted by leading Brazilian arbitrators and arbitral institutions. The conference was attended by over 300 arbitration professionals, mainly from Brazil. James spoke on a panel addressing developments in the powers exercised by arbitrators. James’ presentation focused on the powers of the arbitrator to compel third parties to participate in the arbitration proceeding.

January 2015 – James Hosking spoke at the ICDR Miami International Arbitration Conference: Dispute Resolution in the Americas. This is an annual event bringing together arbitration counsel, arbitrators and clients to discuss contentious issues affecting resolution of disputes involving Latin America. James spoke on a panel discussing recent legislative developments affecting international arbitration in popular jurisdictions in the region.

June 2015 – Chaffetz Lindsey partner Aníbal Sabater will be moderating “The Americanization of International Arbitration is a Good Thing” debate panel at the upcoming CIArb North American Branch’s one-day conference focusing on the challenges of arbitrating in North America.  Aníbal will be joined by panelists Louise Barrington (FCIArb), Kathleen Paisley (FCIArb, Ambos NBGO), and Maria Chedid (Baker & McKenzie).

The conference – themed “Arbitrating in North America – Now and Tomorrow” – has been organized in celebration of the Centenary of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.  Taking place at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law on June 11, 2015, the event will feature dynamic speakers from across North America who will be addressing topics including status of international commercial arbitration in North America, the common law/civil law divide in arbitration, practical pointers on how to arbitrate in California and various emerging trends in North American arbitrations. The keynote speaker for the conference will be the President of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Charles Brown.
