Charlie Scibetta Speaks at National Forum on Reducing Legal Costs

October 2011 – James Hosking was a panelist at the Practicing Law Institute’s 2011 “Commercial Arbitration” seminar held on October 12. The theme of the seminar was strategies for increased efficiency and cost-effectivenes in commercial arbitration. James’ panel addressed recent developments in international arbitration, including the revised ICC Arbitration Rules that will come into force in 2012. James focused on emergency measures of protection available before an international arbitration tribunal is constituted. His review of the procedural mechanisms employed by various arbitral institutions—including the ICC, ICDR, ICSID, LCIA, SCC, SIAC, and NAI—highlighted the wave of revisions in institutional rules to accommodate requests for pre-arbitral relief. March 2011 – Chaffetz Lindsey is continuing its support of the annual Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot. The moot, held each year in Vienna, brings together students from around the world to compete in rounds of mock arbitral hearings.  This year’s moot – the 18th  – will be attended by students from 262 universities and 66 countries.

In recent weeks, Chaffetz Lindsey’s James Hosking and Yasmine Lahlou have acted as arbitrators in several moot preparation events in New York and on March 26 the firm hosted a practice session. In addition, James was a keynote speaker at the pre-moot event held at the American Arbitration Association’s International Centre for Dispute Resolution on March 11.  James is also a co-coach of the Harvard Law School Vis team.

June 17, 2010 – Chaffetz Lindsey partner James Hosking was one of the presenters in the 21^st Annual Institute for Transnational Arbitration Workshop in Dallas.  This year’s workshop featured an innovative format of a mock arbitration that will be played out over three annual events, each focusing on a different aspect of arbitration strategy and practice.  The workshop also featured a controversial interactive session on “Corporate Perspectives on the Arbitral Process”.  The event was attended by several hundred lawyers, academics, corporate counsel and other members of the arbitral community.  The workshop is also video-taped and used for educational purposes in teaching arbitration practice strategy.

Chaffetz Lindsey also was a sponsor of the ITA Young Practitioners Roundtable that took place in Dallas on June 16, 2009.  Chaffetz Lindsey partners David Lindsey and James Hosking are members of the ITA Advisory Board.

October 2009 – On November 12, 2009, Chaffetz Lindsey partner Peter Chaffetz will speak during the first General Session of ARIAS US’s 2009 Fall Conference. Peter and his co-panelists, Peter Gentile (arbitrator), Kathryn Ellsworth (Grais & Ellsworth), and David Thirkill (The Thirkill Group, Inc.), will speak on issues that can arise in arbitration in light of the current economic climate. Chaffetz Lindsey partner James Hosking co-edited the first comprehensive symposium on the protection of intellectual property rights (IPRs) through bilateral investment treaties and other international investment agreements (IIAs). Published on the Transnational Dispute Management website, the special edition, with contributions from a dozen leading practitioners and academics, delves into the complex – at times tense – political and legal interplay between IPRs and IIAs and provides much needed guidance in an area where many issues remain untested.
