Gretta Walters to Speak at 2023 AIJA Half-Year Conference

May 2023 – Chaffetz Lindsey’s Gretta Walters will speak at the 2023 AIJA Half-Year Conference taking place in The Hague, Netherlands on Thursday, May 25th. Gretta will join Vincenzo Palmisano (PBC Legal), Edward Taylor (Shearman and Sterling) and Diederik Van Tuyll (Höcker advocaten) for the session titled “Access to Justice, Right to a Fair Trial, Consent to Arbitration – Ensuring Everyone’s Right to a Day in Court”.

The session will address potential hurdles for a party’s access to justice and right to a fair trial, such as costs, procedural tactics and (social) media influencing. In addition, the question of what constitutes valid consent to arbitration will be investigated. Marijn De Ruysscher (LYDIAN) will moderate the discussion.

Cia Moss to Speak at 2023 ARIAS Spring Conference

May 2023—Cia Moss will speak at the 2023 ARIAS Spring Conference on Friday, May 19th alongside David Ichel (X-Dispute LLC), Sylvia Kaminsky (ARIAS Certified Arbitrator) and Elaine Caprio (Caprio Consulting) for the Ethics Session “Arbitrator Disclosures—How is the System Working?”

The panel will address issues of ethics and gray areas in challenging hypotheticals using audience polling to get counsel, party and arbitrator views on such issues.

Caline Mouawad to Speak at 2023 World Arbitration Update

May 2023 – Chaffetz Lindsey’s Caline Mouawad will speak at the upcoming World Arbitration Update on Monday, May 22nd at 11am EST. The World Arbitration Update (WAU) will update the global community on topics of investment and international commercial arbitration and public international law in a decentralized forum.

Caline will join Pedro Soto (Gibson Dunn), Guled Yusuf (Allen & Overy), David Khachvani (Lévy Kaufman-Kohler) and Athina Fouchard Papaefstratiou (Independent Arbitrator) for the panel “Corruption in Investment Projects: The Standard of Proof and the Consequences for Investment Arbitration.” In this discussion, panelists will (i) consider the consequences of corruption for the arbitration depending on whether the corrupt acts took place when the investment was made or when the investment was already operating in the host State; and (ii) address the standard of proof that applies to allegations of corruption in the context of in investment projects, (iii) analyze the lack of clarity and consensus on what the standard of proof is when dealing with allegations of corruption; and (iv) discuss the advantages and disadvantages of a more flexible and case-sensitive standard. Rainbow Willard (Willard Arbitration) will moderate.

Peter Chaffetz to Speak at 2023 London International Disputes Week

April 2023 —Chaffetz Lindsey’s Andreas Frischknecht will chair a session at the upcoming 2023 IBA Annual Litigation Forum taking place in Buenos Aires from May 3 – 5, 2023.

Andy’s May 4 session on “Hot Topics in E-Commerce: Privacy, Jurisdiction and General Terms and Conditions” will explore both current trends and anticipated future developments in cross-border disputes in the rapidly evolving world of e-commerce.

Speaking with Andy will be Karina Goldberg (Ferro Castro Neves Daltro & Gomide Advogados), Antoine Laniez (NautaDutilh), Javier Muñoz (Mercado Libre) and Lucinda Orr (Enyo Law).

Andreas Frischknecht to Speak on NYIAC-ASA Joint New York Panel

April 2023— Chaffetz Lindsey’s Andreas Frischknecht will join a panel discussion on “New York and Swiss Perspectives on Arbitration: The Interplay of Arbitral Proceedings and Awards with the Courts” on Tuesday, April 25th. The event will be jointly hosted by the New York International Arbitration Center (NYIAC) and the Swiss Arbitration Center (ASA).

Panelists will explore the nuances of setting aside and enforcing arbitral awards in New York and Switzerland, as well as other ancillary proceedings ranging from evidence gathering and discovery to interim measures and arbitrator challenges, while highlighting some of the key differences between the two jurisdictions.

April 2023— Chaffetz Lindsey’s Gretta Walters will speak at the BLS 6th Annual Conference on Thursday, April 20th, 2023. The event’s central theme will be “What to expect from Brazil over the next four years? Legal and economic perspectives.”

Gretta will speak on the second panel of the day on “Arbitrating in Brazil: Present and Future” with Jose F. Sanchez (Vinson & Elkins) and Marcio Vasconcellos (King & Spalding). Pedro Martinez Fraga (Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner) will moderate.

Yasmine Lahlou to Speak on 2023 Columbia Arbitration Day Panel

April 2023— Chaffetz Lindsey’s Yasmine Lahlou will speak at the upcoming 2023 Columbia Arbitration Day on Friday, April 14th. The theme of this year’s event is “Arbitration Beyond the Box: New Innovations & Perspectives” and will feature panels discussing ESG arbitration, Belt-and-Road disputes, and domestic judges on international arbitration.

Yasmine will take part in the second panel of the day “Navigating Belt-and-Road Disputes” alongside Jingzhou Tao (Arbitration Chambers), Lianjun Li (Partner, Reed Smith Hong Kong), Diana Tsutieva (Partner, Foley Hoag) and Simon Navarro (Partner, Sidley Austin). Peter Chaffetz and Andy Frischknecht Present at AIDA Swiss Chapter Event in Zurich

April 2023—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Peter Chaffetz and Andy Frischknecht recently delivered a talk on “U.S. Mass Tort Litigation—Implications for Insurers” at an AIDA Swiss Chapter event in Zurich, Switzerland.  Peter and Andy surveyed key features of U.S. litigation that have driven explosive growth in the size of jury awards in mass tort litigation and examined how those dynamics played out in recent major cases.

Dr. Andrea Stäubli, Counsel at Prager Dreifuss, Member of the AIDA Swiss Chapter Committee and recently a visiting attorney with Chaffetz Lindsey in New York moderated the event which took place at the world headquarters of Zurich Insurance Company.

April 2023— Chaffetz Lindsey’s Gretta Walters will speak at the 18th Annual ICDR Y&I Coffee House Debate in Vienna, Austria on Sunday, April 2nd at 12:30pm-2:30pm CEST. Gretta and accompanying panelists Malcolm Robach (Mannheimer Swartling), Katie Gonzalez (Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton), Dr. Désirée Prantl (Baker McKenzie), Anamaria G. Marin (SLCG) and Giorgio A. Sassine (Musick, Peeler & Garrett) will debate the following propositions: i) States cannot rely on their own breach of internal requirements to avoid arbitration agreements; and ii) Investigations carried out by states about the other side’s alleged corruption should not prevent arbitrations from proceeding.

The discussion will be moderated by Mark Kantor (Independent Arbitrator) and Patricia Shaughnessy (Stockholm University).
