Yasmine Lahlou to Speak on 2023 Columbia Arbitration Day Panel

April 2023— Chaffetz Lindsey’s Yasmine Lahlou will speak at the upcoming 2023 Columbia Arbitration Day on Friday, April 14th. The theme of this year’s event is “Arbitration Beyond the Box: New Innovations & Perspectives” and will feature panels discussing ESG arbitration, Belt-and-Road disputes, and domestic judges on international arbitration.

Yasmine will take part in the second panel of the day “Navigating Belt-and-Road Disputes” alongside Jingzhou Tao (Arbitration Chambers), Lianjun Li (Partner, Reed Smith Hong Kong), Diana Tsutieva (Partner, Foley Hoag) and Simon Navarro (Partner, Sidley Austin). Prof. Robert Smit (Columbia Law School) will moderate.

This panel features law firm partners and arbitrators that will discuss the role of the Belt-and-Road Initiative (BRI) in their practice and how different jurisdictions and arbitration institutions deal with BRI disputes.

Peter Chaffetz and Andy Frischknecht Present at AIDA Swiss Chapter Event in Zurich

April 2023—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Peter Chaffetz and Andy Frischknecht recently delivered a talk on “U.S. Mass Tort Litigation—Implications for Insurers” at an AIDA Swiss Chapter event in Zurich, Switzerland.  Peter and Andy surveyed key features of U.S. litigation that have driven explosive growth in the size of jury awards in mass tort litigation and examined how those dynamics played out in recent major cases.

Dr. Andrea Stäubli, Counsel at Prager Dreifuss, Member of the AIDA Swiss Chapter Committee and recently a visiting attorney with Chaffetz Lindsey in New York moderated the event which took place at the world headquarters of Zurich Insurance Company.

Gretta Walters to Speak at the 11th Bergsten Lecture on CISG and Arbitration

April 2023— Chaffetz Lindsey’s Gretta Walters will speak at the 11th Bergsten Lecture in Vienna, Austria on Sunday, April 2nd from 3pm-5:30pm. The lecture, given by Prof. Dr. Ingeborg Schwenzer, will discuss the topic of “CISG and Arbitration”.

Introduction will be given by Paul Oberhammer (University of Vienna). Gretta and Florian Mohs (Pestalozzi Attorneys at Law Ltd) will be discussants and Stefan Riegler (Arb|Aut) will moderate.

The event will take place during the Vis Moot finals in Vienna.

Gretta Walters to Join Panel at 18th Annual ICDR Y&I Coffee House Debate

April 2023— Chaffetz Lindsey’s Gretta Walters will speak at the 18th Annual ICDR Y&I Coffee House Debate in Vienna, Austria on Sunday, April 2nd at 12:30pm-2:30pm CEST. Gretta and accompanying panelists Malcolm Robach (Mannheimer Swartling), Katie Gonzalez (Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton), Dr. Désirée Prantl (Baker McKenzie), Anamaria G. Marin (SLCG) and Giorgio A. Sassine (Musick, Peeler & Garrett) will debate the following propositions: i) States cannot rely on their own breach of internal requirements to avoid arbitration agreements; and ii) Investigations carried out by states about the other side’s alleged corruption should not prevent arbitrations from proceeding.

The discussion will be moderated by Mark Kantor (Independent Arbitrator) and Patricia Shaughnessy (Stockholm University).

Caline Mouawad to Speak on 2023 Paris Arbitration Week Panel

March 2023— Chaffetz Lindsey’s Caline Mouawad will speak at Paris Arbitration Week on Thursday, March 30th. The panel “News from Across the Pond: Recent Vital Developments in U.S. Arbitration Practice” will take place from 8:30am-10am.

Caline will be joined by host speakers Lisa Richman, Romilly Holland and Stefano Mechelli from McDermott Will & Emery and fellow guest speaker Miriam Harwood (Squire Patton Boggs) for a discussion on recent vital developments in U.S. arbitration practice.

Paris Arbitration Week is taking place March 27th-March 31st, 2023. The events are aimed to connect the worldwide community of arbitration practitioners, boosting rich academic debate and promoting Paris as the eternal home of international arbitration.

Matilde Flores and Silvia Marroquin to Speak at 3rd NYU Sciences Po Intergenerational Arbitration Symposium

March 2023— Chaffetz Lindsey’s Matilde Flores and Silvia Marroquin will speak at the 3rd NYU Sciences Po Intergenerational Arbitration Symposium: “Hot Topics in International Arbitration” on Friday, March 24th. The event offers an opportunity to confront the visions of young professionals at the beginning of their careers with those of experienced practitioners on pressing issues in arbitration.

Silvia will moderate the 10:15am discussion “Open Questions in International Arbitration” between Jonathan Schaffer-Goddard (Holwell Shuster & Goldberg) and Paola Patarroyo (New York University), with Brian King (Independent Arbitrator) as debater.

Matilde will speak on how to prove corruption in international arbitration during the 11:20am session “Corruption Allegations in International Arbitration” opposite of Ezequiel Vetulli (Freshfields), with Daniel Schimmel (Foley Hoag) as debater.

Caline Mouawad Joins Panel at 2023 USC-JAMS Arbitration Symposium in Collaboration with SIAC

March 2023— Chaffetz Lindsey’s Caline Mouawad will speak at the upcoming 7th Annual USC-JAMS Arbitration Symposium in Collaboration with SIAC on Thursday, March 16, 2023. Caline will join Linda A. Klein (Baker Donelson), TJ Auner (Jones Day) and Charline Yim (Gibson Dunn) for the panel titled “Subpoena and Third-Party Evidence – the State of Play” taking place at 11:00am PT/1:00pm ET.

The panel will review the current status of the law on the ability to compel third parties to an arbitration to produce evidence. They will also consider the differences between domestic arbitration and international arbitration, recent 9th Circuit and US Supreme Court cases and other relevant case law.

The Symposium, hosted by the Singapore International Arbitration Center, University of Southern California and JAMS, is the keystone event of the 2nd Annual California International Arbitration Week (CIAW).

Luisa Quintao to Moderate CIArb Brazil Discussion about the 2023 Vis Moot Problem

January 2023— Luisa Quintao will moderate a discussion organized CIArb Brazil about the legal issues of this year’s Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Problem.  Dr Crina Baltag, FCIArb and Sophie Nappert will join Luisa at 12pm EST on Thursday, January 26th for the virtual event.
