Yasmine Lahlou to Speak at Annual Conference of the African Arbitration Association

October 2023—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Yasmine Lahlou will speak at the upcoming Annual Conference of the African Arbitration Association on Saturday, October 14th. The conference, taking place October 12th-October 14th in Cape Town, South Africa will cover the theme “International Arbitration in Africa: Transitions and New Perspectives.”

Yasmine will speak on panel six titled “Effective Enforcement of Arbitral Awards in Africa: Achievements and Challenges.”

Matilde Flores to Speak on “The Current Landscape of Arbitration in Latin America” Wednesday, October 11th

October 2023—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Matilde Flores will speak on a panel to discuss “The Current Landscape of Arbitration in Latin America” (“Panorama Actual Del Arbitraje En América Latina”) on Wednesday, October 11th at 10am EST.

Matilde will be joined by Juan Felipe Merizalde, Sebastián Briceño, María Inés Corrá, Isabela Lacreta, Adrián Magallanes, Mayte Sánchez, Franceso Campora and Angélica Perdomo for the discussion.

Caline Mouawad to speak at Seventeenth Annual Investment Treaty Arbitration

October 2023— Chaffetz Lindsey’s Caline Mouawad will speak at the upcoming Seventeenth Annual Investment Treaty Arbitration Conference on Thursday, October 12th in Washington, DC. The four-panel program will feature leading arbitration practitioners and scholars who will tackle important questions of international investment law and arbitration.

The program format will focus on eight talented ITA “rising superstars” from all over the world, each taking a side in arguing one of four contentious issues. Each author will present and outline their argument papers, after which a panel of experienced and distinguished professionals will debate and discuss the positions taken by the authors and the issue more generally.

Caline will join the first panel of the day for the following discussion: “This coming December, the withdrawal of France, Germany, and Poland from the Energy Charter Treaty will take effect. Leaders in each of these states claimed withdrawal was necessary because ECT obligations were hindering efforts to combat anthropomorphic-driven climate change. Was this stated justification correct as a matter of international investment law?” The following individuals will participate in the panel:

Anibal Sabater to Speak at 2023 Colombia Arbitration Day

September 2023—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Anibal Sabater will join a panel discussion for the second annual Colombia Arbitration Day on Tuesday, September 19th. Anibal will be featured on the second panel of the day titled “Parallel Proceedings in Arbitration: International Tribunals, Judges and Oversight Bodies,” taking place virtually in Spanish.

Additional panelists include Sofia de Sampaio (Armesto & Asociados), Monica Jimenez Gonzalez (Geopark), and Mairée Urán (Subsecretaría de Relaciones Económicas Internacionales Chile). Lukas Montoya (Lévy Kaufmann-Kohler) will moderate the discussion.

Colombia Arbitration Week (CAW) is an academic event organized with the support of Colombian Very Young Arbitration Practitioners (COLVYAP). CAW provides a specialized and intergenerational forum for discussion around arbitration and its challenges and perspectives in Colombia.

James Hosking to Speak at 2023 German Arbitration Institute (DIS) Autumn Conference

September 2023— Chaffetz Lindsey’s James Hosking will attend the annual German Arbitration Institute (DIS) Autumn Conference September 13th-September 14th in Berlin, Germany. The event, “A world map of arbitration in the 21st century – and what to find in Germany,” will discuss cutting-edge developments in international arbitration globally, while also putting some of the most prevalent myths about German arbitration under the microscope.

James will be joined by Raëd Fathallah (Bredin Prat) and Nathalie Voser (Rothorn) for the Thursday morning panel “The Famous German Efficiency (?) – the Outside Perspectives.” Inka Hanefeld (Hanefeld) will moderate.

James Hosking to Speak at 2023 GAR Live: Berlin

September 2023—James Hosking will join the Global Arbitration Review event GAR Live 2023 in Berlin, Germany on September 12th, moderating a panel on “Ordre Public and Ethics in Contract-Based Arbitration with States.” The event will take place as part of Berlin Dispute Resolution Days taking place September 12th-15th.  The panel will explore the topics of bribery and corruption, transparency and disclosure and a code of conduct for arbitrators.

Panelists include Antony Crockett (Herbert Smith Freehills), Laurent Killias (Pestalozzi), Barton Legum (Honlet Legum), Erica Stein (Stein Arbitration) and Dário Moura Vicente (University of Lisbon).

Anibal Sabater to Speak at ICAL 20th Anniversary Conference

August 2023— Chaffetz Lindsey’s Anibal Sabater will speak at the upcoming ICAL 20th Anniversary Conference in Stockholm, Sweden on August 31st. Anibal will join the Thursday afternoon panel “Rise of the Machines or Sleep Mode: Is International Arbitration Ready for the Technology Revolution?” The group will examine technological advancements that international arbitration is or should be using as well as explore issues that an overreliance on technology could bring.

Panelists include Joel Altschul (EY), Monica Crespo (Jus Mundi), Edward Jansson Stiernblad (Vinge) and Sophie Nappert (3VB).

The international conference taking place August 31st-September 1st will celebrate twenty years of study and research in international arbitration at the Master Program of International Commercial Arbitration Law at Stockholm University. The event will bring together leading arbitration practitioners, academics, and arbitrators from all over the world to examine whether we have truly mastered international arbitration in the last two decades.

James Hosking Speaks on “Dialogue between Adjudicators” Panel at International Law Association 150th Anniversary Symposium

June 2023—Chaffetz Lindsey’s James Hosking spoke at the International Law Association’s 150th Anniversary Symposium in Paris on Tuesday, June 20th.

On a panel moderated by Professors Andrea Bjorklund and Yueming Yan,  James was joined by Estelle Cros, Ignacio Tirado, Senior Judge Diane P. Wood and Professor Catherine Kessedjian for the Tuesday afternoon panel “Le dialogue des juges (y compris avec les arbitres)” | “Dialogue between Adjudicators (including arbitrators)”.

The International Law Association (ILA), founded in Brussels in 1873, has over 4,000 members around the world and 60+ branches across all continents.

Caline Mouawad to Speak at 35th Annual ITA Workshop

June 2023 – Chaffetz Lindsey’s Caline Mouawad will speak at the 35th Annual ITA Workshop on Thursday, June 15th. The panel titled “How the Arbitral Process Affects the Availability and Effectiveness of Monetary and Non-Monetary Relief” will discuss the need for an efficient and swift arbitration process in awarding non-monetary remedies. Caline will be joined by Stephen P. Anway (Squire Patton Boggs) and Anne-Veronique Schapfler (White & Case). The discussion will be moderated by Thomas Voisin (Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan).

The 35th Annual ITA Workshop will take place in Austin, Texas from June 14th– June 16th. To kick off the conference, the firm will be sponsoring the Young ITA Roundtable event taking place on Wednesday, June 14th.

Anibal will join Montserrat Manzano (Von Wobeser y Sierra), Andrés Nieto (Norton Rose Fulbright), Enrique Molina (Omni Bridgeway) and Antonio Barrera (Holland & Knight) for the Wednesday morning panel “Arbitraje, Regulaciones ESG y Transición Energética”. Anibal Sabater to Speak at 2023 UIA International Arbitration Conference in Bilbao

May 2023—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Anibal Sabater will speak at the UIA International Arbitration Conference on Friday, May 26th. Anibal will present on “Arbitration and Sanctions” along with Jacomijn Van Haersolte-Van Hof (Director General of the London Court of International Arbitration), Lisette Hernández Del Olmo (Garrigues), and Alina Nedea (European Commission) with Elena Gillis Cintrano (Uría Menéndez)  as moderator.

Gretta Walters to Speak at 2023 AIJA Half-Year Conference

May 2023 – Chaffetz Lindsey’s Gretta Walters will speak at the 2023 AIJA Half-Year Conference taking place in The Hague, Netherlands on Thursday, May 25th. Gretta will join Vincenzo Palmisano (PBC Legal), Edward Taylor (Shearman and Sterling) and Diederik Van Tuyll (Höcker advocaten) for the session titled “Access to Justice, Right to a Fair Trial, Consent to Arbitration – Ensuring Everyone’s Right to a Day in Court”.

The session will address potential hurdles for a party’s access to justice and right to a fair trial, such as costs, procedural tactics and (social) media influencing. In addition, the question of what constitutes valid consent to arbitration will be investigated. Marijn De Ruysscher (LYDIAN) will moderate the discussion.
