James Hosking to Speak at Penn Carey Law International Arbitration Conference

March 2025—Chaffetz Lindsey’s James Hosking will join the 7th Penn Carey Law International Arbitration Conference on March 21st in Philadelphia. 20+ leading experts from academia, businesses and law firms will discuss how courts and arbitral proceedings are adapting to the critical challenges shaping the modern legal landscape, such as climate change, geopolitical tensions, and emerging industries.

James will participate in the panel on “Resolving Disputes in Emerging Industries: Renewable Energy Sector,” joined by Diora Ziyaeva (Dentons), David Attanasio (Womble Bond Dickinson), and Franco Benza (HKA). The group will examine the unique challenges and opportunities presented in the renewables sector, with James focusing primarily on risk allocation in PPAs and navigating regulatory and technological changes. The discussion will be moderated by Ayodeji K. Perrin (George Sharswood Fellow; Penn Carey Law School).

Alan Lipkin Joins Offshore Disputes Week in the Cayman Islands

March 2025—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Alan Lipkin will participate in Thought Leaders 4 FIRE’s Offshore Disputes Week, taking place March 24th-March 26th in the Cayman Islands.

Alan will join Joel Cohen (Stout), Fiona MacAdam (Walkers (Cayman) LLP), Liam Faulkner (Campbells) and Tom Wright (Bedell Cristin Cayman Partnership) for the March 25th panel “Value Extraction of Stakeholders: Cayman Islands and U.S. Perspectives”.

Peter Chaffetz Explores Disputes in the Insurance Industry at Offshore Disputes Week

March 2025—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Peter Chaffetz will participate in Thought Leaders 4 FIRE’s Offshore Disputes Week, taking place March 24th-March 26th in the Cayman Islands.

Peter will join Marlyn Narkis (MDU Legal, Panama) and Changez Khan (Marshall, Diel & Myers, Bermuda) for the March 26th panel “Exploring Disputes in the Insurance Industry”.

Anibal Sabater Hosts NYIAC Talks Podcast Spotlight on International Arbitration in Latin America: Mexico (Part II)

March 2025–  Chaffetz Lindsey’s Anibal Sabater will host an upcoming NYIAC Talks podcast “International Arbitration in Latin America: Mexico” with Noiana Marigo (Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer) on Thursday, March 13th.

Anibal and Noiana will interview Cecilia Azar (Galicia Abogados) with special guest Dr. Antonio Ortiz-Mena (AOM Advisors) for the second episode of the podcast series, continuing the discussion from January 31st, 2025 on recent developments in Mexico.

Anibal Sabater Joins California Arbitration Week Panel on Artificial Intelligence

February 2025—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Anibal Sabater will speak on the panel “Who, What, Where, When and Why to Disclose Artificial Intelligence” during California International Arbitration Week on Tuesday, March 11th in Los Angeles, California.

Anibal will join Svetlana Gitman (AAA- ICDR), Benjamin Malek (T.H.E. Chambers, SVAMC, SVAMC AI Task Force), and Sarah Reynolds (Arbitrator and Mediator) to discuss how practitioners are using A.I. and consider what uses are benign, what uses are improper; and what uses should be disclosed. The group will examine the 2024 SVAMC A.I. Guidelines on the Use of A.I. in Arbitration and guidelines issued by various administering institutions as well as the courts to consider when, how and why disclosures on A.I. should or shouldn’t be made. Jonathan W. Fitch (JAMS) will moderate the discussion.

Yasmine Lahlou Joins California International Arbitration Week Panel on Expedited Arbitration

February 2025–  Chaffetz Lindsey’s Yasmine Lahlou will speak on the panel “Life in the Fast Lane: Making Expedited Arbitration Work for You” during California International Arbitration Week on Wednesday, March 12th in Los Angeles, California.

Yasmine, who is a co-chair of the ICC Commission’s Working Group on the ICC’s Expedited Procedure Provisions (EPP), will join Peter Durning (Boeing, ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR), Marek Krasula (Arbitration and ADR, ICC Dispute Resolution Services), and Kirsten Odynski (White & Case), who is also a member of the EPP Working Group, to discuss the Working group’s progress and how parties and arbitrators are designing procedural frameworks under the EPP (EPP) and share best practices. Nathan O’Malley (Musick Peeler) will moderate the discussion.

Yasmine Lahlou to Join ICC World Business Law Institute’s Training on Oral Advocacy

February 2025—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Yasmine Lahlou will join ICC’s Oral Advocacy in International Arbitration: the Good, the Bad and the In Between Advanced Training taking place in Abu Dhabi on Monday, February 10th.

Yasmine and Jean Pierre Harb (Jones Day) will teach the session “Oral advocacy at the main hearing” and discuss i) orally pleading a case “through” witness examination: counsel perspectives, tribunal perspectives and ii) closing statements and post-hearing briefs: transcripts, recency and the new emphasis on speed in rendering the award.

The training will take place on the eve of the 13th ICC MENA Conference on International Arbitration, an event hosting practitioners from around the world to discuss latest trends, developments and strategies in arbitration in the Middle East and North Africa.

The event, co-sponsored by NYU Law School and SciencesPo Law School, will cover hot topics of international arbitration.

Marcel will join Carlos Hafemann to discuss “Arbitration: Limits and Preconditions”. Marcel will speak about the effects of a party’s lack of funds on the arbitration agreement, while Carlos will cover jurisdiction and admissibility issues in multitiered dispute resolution clauses.

James Hosking to Speak at 2025 CPR Annual Meeting in Miami

February 2025—Chaffetz Lindsey’s James Hosking will speak on a panel at the 2025 CPR Annual Meeting taking place February 5th-February 7th in Miami, Florida. The panel titled “Bifurcation – Achieving Balance for the Efficient and Fair Resolution of Disputes” will address the ways in which tribunals bifurcate arbitral proceedings.

James will be joined by Lauren Friedman (King & Spalding), Meg Kinnear (Low & Kinnear Dispute Resolution), Jaime Garcia Nieto (Airbus), and Carlos Ramos-Mrosovsky (BakerHostetler). The group will discuss some of the virtues and pitfalls of bifurcation, including efficiency and fairness concerns and comment on whether it would be helpful to adopt a uniform standard to guide bifurcation.
