October 2020 – On Friday, October 16th, Silvia Marroquin will moderate a workshop titled, “Written Advocacy in International Arbitration.” The workshop is hosted by the Harvard International Arbitration Society (HIALSA), a student-run organization at Harvard Law School aimed to promote the study of arbitration and create connections between students and arbitration practitioners.

James Hosking Serves as Faculty Member at University of Roma Tre

September 2020 – James Hosking is serving as Faculty Member at the seventh edition of the Certificate in International Commercial and Investment Arbitration hosted by University of Roma Tre. On Tuesday, September 22nd, James will lead a discussion about “Complex privity: extension of arbitration obligations in multiparty transactions.”

The Certificate Program is led by leading academics, in-house counsel and practitioners and is aimed at providing theoretical and practical insights, including interactive workshops, about investment and commercial arbitration. This year’s program is available in-class and online.

 

 

Anibal Sabater to Speak About Arbitration in Complex Contracts

September 2020 – On Wednesday, September 16th, Anibal Sabater will participate in an online panel discussion about “Arbitration in Complex Contracts.” Panelists will discuss multi-party and multi-contract arbitrations, the cost and time investment of efficiently handling the arbitration and unforeseen circumstances when dealing with complex contract arbitrations.

The webinar will take place on Wednesday, September 16th at 11:00am EST on Facebook Live. The discussion will be conducted in Spanish.

The event is hosted by Arbitraje Alumni, and organized within the framework of the XIII edition of the organization’s International Arbitration Competition.

Yasmine Lahlou to Speak About the New York Convention, Due Process and The Taking of Evidence in Remote Arbitrations

September 2020 – On Thursday, September 10th, Yasmine Lahlou will participate in an online seminar about “International versus domestic standards under the New York Convention: due process and public policy limitations for the production of evidence in online arbitrations.” During the seminar, Yasmine and other panelists will discuss the New York Convention and best practices for dealing with due process limitations in the taking of evidence in remote arbitrations.

The discussion is part of a joint initiative between New York University (NYU) – Center for Transnational Litigation, Arbitration and Commercial Law, and FGVLAW – Graduate Program of FGV Direito SP.

Silvia Marroquin to Discuss the Dos and Don’ts of Your First Hostile Cross-Examination

July 2020 – On Friday, July 31st, Silvia Marroquin will join Prof. Juan Fernandéz-Armesto (Armesto & Asociados, Madrid) and Thomas Kendra (Hogan Lovells, Paris) for a Young ICCA webinar about “Your First Hostile Cross-Examination – Dos and Don’ts.” The practical discussion will focus on best practices for the cross-examination of fact witnesses, followed by a mock cross-examination.

Silvia Marroquin Speaks as a Guest Lecturer at IE Law School

July 2020 – Chaffetz Lindsey associate Silvia Marroquin recently spoke as a guest lecturer at the “Advanced Issues in International Arbitration” class in the LL.M. program of the IE Law School. As an alumna of the program, Silvia was invited by Professor Marco de Benito to speak to the class about starting a career in international arbitration, the arbitration market, and the various career paths in the profession. During the class, Silvia and Professor de Benito discussed a variety of topics, including navigating the arbitration market in different cities, applying for internships, LL.M. programs, bar admissions, the diversity of backgrounds and profiles in the field, the various places to start you career (i.e., an institution, clerking for an arbitrator, a law firm) and getting creative in today’s climate. The group also discussed general tips on how to start building your business development plan as a junior associate.

Anibal Sabater to Participate in a Discussion about the Opportunities and Challenges in International Arbitration Arising From COVID-19

July 2020 – On Thursday, July 16th, Anibal Sabater will participate in a one-on-one interview with Flor & Hurtado partner Agustin Hurtado. The webinar, titled “How will COVID-19 affect International Arbitration? Opportunities and Challenges,” will cover a wide-variety of topics related to COVID-19’s impact on international arbitration, including:

    1. Logistical aspects such as delays and disruptions in existing and future processes, the transition to virtual audiences, and the impact on arbitration centers
    2. The economic crisis and resulting increase in conflicts and arbitrations

15 Tips for Law Students to Succeed in Online Interviews and Remote Work

June 2020 – Michele Moorman, Director of People & Recruiting at Chaffetz Lindsey LLP, recently spoke to Fordham Law School students who are just starting their summer remote internships, clerkships, and fellowships.  Jayne Schreiber, Assistant Dean of Career Planning, and Deborah Dempster, Associate Director of the Career Planning Center (CPC), moderated the discussion and asked panelists to share their best practices for video interviews and working remotely.

Michele joined other esteemed panelists Lillian Evans, Deputy Director of Legal Recruiting for the New York City Law Department; Maja Hazell, Global Head of Diversity and Inclusion at White & Case; and Nancy Parker, Director of Attorney Recruitment at Fried, Frank.

“A Virtual Debate on Virtual Hearings” CIArb YMG Event Features Rainbow Williams and Lidia Rezende

June 2020 — On June 24th at 10am ET, CIArb’s Young Members Group is hosting “A Virtual Debate on Virtual Hearings.” Chaffetz Lindsey is pleased to co-sponsored this event, which will feature two of our attorneys, Rainbow Willard and Lidia Rezende, as panelists.

This event will bring together young practitioners from Geneva, London, New York and Dubai for a lively and engaging debate regarding the future of virtual arbitration hearings.  Practitioners will draw on their experience from some of the first virtual hearings held post-Covid to debate whether these virtual hearings should continue to be widely used after public health concerns dissipate.  Viewers will have the opportunity to vote at the close of the debate, as well as to pose questions and make comments during a Q&A session to follow.

Anibal Sabater to Speak About Decisions and Deliberations in Arbitral Awards

June 2020 – On Thursday, June 18th, Anibal Sabater will participate in a virtual panel discussion titled “Partes de Laudo: Decisión y Deliberación.” Anibal and the other panelists will analyze the decision and deliberation process of an arbitral award. The event is part of a three session mini-series about arbitration awards hosted by Foro Jóvenes en Arbitraje CAM-CANACO.

Matilde Flores to Discuss Whether or Not Security Costs Should be Mandated for Investor-State Arbitration

June 2020 – On Tuesday, June 16th, Matilde Flores will participate in a panel discussion titled, “True or False: Security for Costs Should be Mandated for Investor-State Arbitration?” The debate is part of JURIS Conferences’ 14th Annual Investment Treaty Arbitration Conference, a four-session web conference focused on systematic reform currently under consideration in various fora. Some topics of discussion include whether the revised investment chapter in the new NAFTA represents a paradigmatic shift for the U.S. government, proposed prescriptions on double-hatting and security-for-costs orders.
