James Hosking and Gretta Walters Speak on U.S. Election Impact on Trans-Atlantic Business Disputes at the Chamber of Commerce in Hamburg

October 2024—Chaffetz Lindsey’s James Hosking and Gretta Walters will participate in “America at the Crossroads: Wie könnte die US-Wahl 2024 transatlantische Wirtschaftsstreitigkeiten beeinflussen?” (“America at the Crossroads: How could the 2024 U.S. election influence transatlantic economic disputes?”) on October 29th in Hamburg, Germany.

James and Gretta will elaborate how the U.S. election could affect disputes concerning trade, shipping, supply chains, energy, environment, banking and finance. The discussion will be moderated by Richard Happ (Luther).

The event will be hosted by Rechtsstandort Hamburg e.V., Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, the Hamburg Arbitration Circle and Luther.

Aníbal Sabater and Silvia Marroquin to attend 68th Congress of the UIA in Paris

October 2024—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Aníbal Sabater and Silvia Marroquin are set to attend the 68th Congress of the UIA in Paris from October 30th to November 3rd.

As part of their involvement in the Commission on the Future of the Lawyer, Aníbal and Silvia will be organizing the session “Challenges Facing the Legal Profession” to take place on November 2nd. The session will discuss the most pressing challenges faced by the legal profession across geographic regions and fields of practice (e.g., political interference, disregard of the rule of law, economic trends, technological competence), as well as trends and best practices to address those challenges.  Aníbal is President of the Commission on the Future of the Lawyer and Silvia serves as the secretary of the commission.

The panel will gather a multilingual group of esteemed practitioners from around the world and across legal sectors: Singh Avnider, counsel at Cicero Chambers (India), François Girault, partner at Réseau AGN Avocats (France), Yoshihisa Hayakawa, partner at Uryu & Itoga (Japan), Daniela Horvitz, partner at Horvitz y Compañía Abogados (Chile), Pierre-Louis Jameson, Lexumerique (Haiti), Urquiola de Palacio, Immediate Past President of the UIA and partner at Palacio & Asociados (Spain), Bertrand Nzouango, partner at Cabinet d’Avocats Nzouango (Cameroon), and Joseph Yav Katshung, managing partner at Yav & Associates (Democratic Republic of Congo).

Gretta Walters Speaks on Alternative Energy Disputes at AIEN Dispute Resolution in International Energy Business Conference

October 2024—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Gretta Walters is set to speak at the AIEN Dispute Resolution in International Energy Business Conference taking place in Houston, Texas on October 14-15th.

Gretta will join the Tuesday morning panel “Alternative Energy Disputes” to discuss emerging disputes from the solar, wind, nuclear and power generation industries—including state investment, joint venture, financing, IP technology, licensing, regulatory and construction disputes.

Additional panelists include Marcela Berdion-Straub (TotalEnergies), Oisin Brady (Independent Expert) and Nathan O’Malley (Musick Peeler).

James Hosking Delivers Keynote Speech at ASA Town Hall 2024

September 2024—Chaffetz Lindsey’s James Hosking will join Carmen Núñez-Lagos as one of two keynote speakers at the 2024 Swiss Arbitration Association Town Hall on Friday, September 27th.  James will discuss limiting document disclosure in “Taming the Beast – The Case for Limiting Document Disclosure in International Arbitration”.

The ASA Town Hall, taking place in Bern, Switzerland, is focused on advancing arbitration with interactive workshops, networking, expert speakers, and this year will feature moderated discussions on the ASA User Council’s pioneering work on controlling document production.

September 2024—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Yasmine Lahlou will speak on the panel “Contracting and Arbitrating with States and State-owned Entities: Emerging Trends, Challenges and Best Practices” on Thursday, September 26th as part of the 19th ICC New York Conference on International Arbitration in New York, NY.

Yasmine, Gabriel Costa (Shell Brasil Petróleo Ltda), Christina G. Caline Mouawad Joins 2024 International Bar Association Conference Panel

September 2024—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Caline Mouawad will join the panel “A new Hague convention on jurisdiction and parallel claims: a gamechanger in international dispute resolution” at the annual International Bar Association conference taking place in Mexico City on Wednesday, September 18th.

The session will give a perspective on the work of the Hague Conference’s jurisdiction project which, following the success of the Choice of Courts Convention and the Judgments Convention, is now working on a new instrument on parallel proceedings. It will examine the potential impact of any new convention in the context of growing jurisdictional protectionism.

Caline will be speaking along with Victor Corzo (Consulate General of Mexico), Professor Fausto Pocar (University of Milan), and Ben Roe (Baker McKenzie). The session chair is Sara Chisholm-Batten (Michelmores).

Caline Mouawad Joins 2024 Columbia Law School – CIARB Comprehensive Course Faculty

September 2024—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Caline Mouawad will join the renowned faculty to teach the Columbia Law School and Chartered Institute of Arbitrators New York Branch (CIARB)’s Comprehensive Course on International Arbitration taking place September 9th-September 12th in New York City.

Designed for arbitrators, advocates, in-house counsel, academics, and others interested in international arbitration, the comprehensive course offers lectures with interactive opportunities and a number of simulations.

Upon completion, all attendees will receive a certificate of completion from Columbia Law School and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators New York Branch. Application for CLE credit for New York State is pending.

Gretta Walters Speaks at 62nd AIJA International Young Lawyers’ Congress in Madrid

September 2024—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Gretta Walters spoke at the 62nd AIJA International Young Lawyers Congress on Wednesday, September 4th. The annual congress took place in Madrid and gathered the international legal community to discuss and debate the topic: “Thinking Globally – The Role of International Lawyers in a World Searching for Answers.”

Gretta joined Sara Khalil (Schoenherr), Nathalie Weiss (Nägele Rechtsanwälte Gmbh), and Huib Schrama (Rutgers & Posch) on the panel “Global Problems: Associate, Employee, Staff 2.0 – AI and ChatGPT- From Merits To Dispute Resolution – Part II” to discuss the multifaceted challenges pervasive AI influence presents across industries, including law.

The session focused on dispute resolution, including AI and ChatGPT’s role in both the courts and arbitration. Key areas of discussion from the panel of experts encompassed the legal framework and jurisprudence on the use of AI and ChatGPT, the differences between the use of intelligent software in litigation and arbitration and the key benefits and pitfalls of AI, including falsified evidence, data protection and ethical considerations (such as the environmental impact it may have).

Yasmine Lahlou and May Khoury Deliver ISLP International Arbitration Four-day in-Person Training Program to Guyana Government

August 2024—Chaffetz Lindsey’s Yasmine Lahlou and May Khoury ran a workshop on “International Arbitration in Practice” for the Government of Guyana through the Attorney General’s Chambers & Ministry of Legal Affairs, in collaboration with the International Senior Lawyers Project (ISLP) and Winston & Strawn, which took place in Georgetown, Guyana from Monday, August 26 until Thursday, August 29.

Scheduled to take place on the heels of the adoption of the modern Guyana Arbitration Act 2024, the four-day workshop was designed to further enhance the expertise of the attendees, namely attorneys from the Attorney General’s Chambers, those employed in the public sector, as well as members of the Guyana and Berbice Bar Associations participated in the training.

At the opening of the workshop, the Hon. Mohabir Anil Nandlall SC MP, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs underscored the importance of the training, noting that arbitration is the preferred method to settle commercial disputes and will pair well with the transformation taking place across every sector of the country.
