June 2024—Chaffetz Lindsey’s International and Insurance teams have been recognized in the 2024 Legal 500 USA report, both groups ranking among the top practices in the country. Showcasing the depth of the team, in addition to receiving Tier 2 recognition, fourteen partners and counsel have been individually recognized in the report.

In International Arbitration, James Hosking now joins the Hall of Fame, which highlights individuals who have received constant praise from their clients for continued excellence at the pinnacle of the profession. Founding partner, David Lindsey, remains in the Hall of Fame. Chambers 2024 Showcases Depth and Breadth of Chaffetz Lindsey’s International Arbitration and Enforcement Team

June 2024—The recently released 2024 Chambers USA Guide has highlighted the long-standing success of Chaffetz Lindsey’s International Arbitration and Enforcement team.

In addition to Andy Frischknecht, Yasmine Lahlou has now earned Band 1 recognition in the highly regarded International Arbitration: Enforcement rankings. Andy and Yasmine lead a majority of the firm’s major award and enforcement engagements. James Hosking Joins Bucharest Arbitration Days

June 2024—Chaffetz Lindsey’s James Hosking will take part in Bucharest Arbitration Days June 6th-June 7th in Bucharest, Romania. James will join Monique Sasson (Arbitra), Dr. Diora Ziyaeva (Dentons) and Sebastian Lukic (Schoenherr) for the panel “Arbitration and Courts: Support, Supervision or Selection?”. The discussion will be moderated by Jonathan Wood (President of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Chair of RPC’s International Arbitration practice).

James Hosking Joins Panel Discussing “Impossibility” at XVIII International Arbitration Conference in Rio De Janeiro

May 2024—Chaffetz Lindsey’s James Hosking will speak at the upcoming XVIII International Arbitration Conference in Rio De Janeiro on Tuesday, May 14th.  The conference is focused on “Impossibility in International Arbitration.”

James will join Marie-Isabelle Delleur (Clifford Chance), Andrea Carlevaris (BonelliErede) and Leonardo De Campos Melo (LDCM) for the panel “Court Intervention in Situations Where the Arbitral Tribunal Cannot Exert Its Own Jurisdiction”, and will focus on court intervention in gathering evidence. Andre Marini (Gaillard, Banifatemi & Shelbaya Disputes) will moderate the discussion.

James Hosking and Silvia Marroquin Speak at 2024 ARIAS Spring Conference

May 2024— Chaffetz Lindsey’s James Hosking and Silvia Marroquin are set to speak at the upcoming 2024 ARIAS Spring Conference taking place May 1st-May 3rd in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Chaffetz Lindsey’s Cia Moss is co-chair of the event.

Silvia Marroquin will join the panel “How Should Arbitrators Address Potential For Settlement With the Parties? Opportunities, Limits and Ethics” on Thursday, May 3rd.  The panel will address and interact with participants on what tools may or may not be appropriate toward fostering settlement and the appropriate times for such actions, including scheduling a “mediation window”, bifurcation of liability and quantum, inquiring whether the parties have discussed settlement, presenting panel questions meant to highlight the risks on both sides, “ArbMed” or “Med-Arb”, other party-agreed arbitrator participation in settlement efforts, ethical limits and approaches of the various arbitral institutions and rules. Additional panelists include David W. Ichel, (X-Dispute LLP), Elaine A. Caprio (Caprio Consulting) and Carlos A. Romero (Post & Romero LLP).

James Hosking will join Carolyn Thomas (AON) for “Hot Spots and Hot Policies: Political Risk Insurance in Today’s Volatile World” on Thursday, May 3rd. The panel will discuss the types of political risk insurance (PRI) available and interaction with other insurance lines, coverage and exclusion issues, and the application to “gray” areas like economic blockades. Speakers will also consider how the existence of PRI coverage may interact with claims brought under investment treaties for governmental expropriation and unlawful interference, as well as with other forms of risk mitigation. In addition, the panel will assess how PRI coverage may affect country risk for purposes of financial reporting and damages calculations.

James Hosking Delivers Keynote Address “Arbitration Law in the United States: Adventures in Barbie Land” at Miami Arbitration Week

January 2024— Chaffetz Lindsey’s James Hosking gave the keynote address at the recent kick-off event for the inaugural Miami Arbitration Week.  In his speech – “Arbitration Law in the United States: Adventures in Barbie Land” – he took inspiration from the blockbuster Barbie movie, to argue that like Barbie, international arbitration law is suffering from an existential crisis.  The speech set the scene for a panel discussion on the impact of legislation and court reform on arbitration friendliness in the Americas.

Chaffetz Lindsey Arbitration Team Recognized as Global Elite According to Who’s Who Legal

December 2023—Who’s Who Legal Arbitration has released their 2024 rankings with the most prominent names in arbitration, ranking seven Chaffetz Lindsey team members among the highly regarded group. James Hosking and Marcel Engholm Co-Author Article for the Bahrain Chamber for Dispute Resolution International Arbitration Review

December 2023 – Chaffetz Lindsey’s James Hosking and Marcel Engholm contributed to the 14th edition of the Bahrain Chamber for Dispute Resolution’s International Arbitration Review. Published biannually and featuring content in both Arabic and English, the Review comprises articles, case summaries and other significant reports; each issue focusing on a topic of universal interest in international arbitration with an emphasis on relevance to the Arab Region.

James and Marcel co-authored the article titled “The Central Importance of the Seat in Online Dispute Resolution”. The article discusses the authors’ view that while advances in remote hearing technology have liberated arbitrations from the shackles of geography, they may paradoxically have made the juridical seat of arbitration all the more important. The article discusses the main challenges arising in remote hearings and concludes that most are best resolved by reference to the law of the seat.

Chaffetz Lindsey 2023 IBA Annual Conference Delegate Team

October 2023 – Chaffetz Lindsey will be sending a team to the 2023 IBA Annual Conference, which is being held in Paris from October 29th to November 3rd. Peter Chaffetz, James Hosking, Aníbal Sabater, Andreas Frischknecht, Yasmine Lahlou, Caline Mouawad, and Erin Valentine will be in attendance.

During the week, Aníbal will speak Tuesday morning at 11:15am on a panel discussion of “Current trends in international and investment arbitration in Latin America,” which is organized by the Latin American Regional Forum (Lead) and Arbitration Committee. Caline is the workshop chair for the Arbitration Committee’s traditional session that looks into the main developments of the year in investment arbitration called “Highs and lows in investment arbitration” taking place on Thursday at 11:15am.

Chaffetz Lindsey has been actively involved with the IBA over the years. Currently, Andreas is an officer on the IBA Litigation Committee and Caline is Co-Chair of the IBA Investment Arbitration Subcommittee and is a member of the IBA Arbitration Committee’s Task Force on Privilege.

NYIAC Grand Central Forum & 10th Anniversary Celebration September 20th, 2023

September 2023—The New York International Arbitration Center (NYIAC) Grand Central Forum will take place Wednesday, September 20th from 5pm-8:30pm. The flagship annual event will include a celebration of NYIAC’s 10th anniversary. James Hosking to Speak at 2023 German Arbitration Institute (DIS) Autumn Conference

September 2023— Chaffetz Lindsey’s James Hosking will attend the annual German Arbitration Institute (DIS) Autumn Conference September 13th-September 14th in Berlin, Germany. The event, “A world map of arbitration in the 21st century – and what to find in Germany,” will discuss cutting-edge developments in international arbitration globally, while also putting some of the most prevalent myths about German arbitration under the microscope.

James will be joined by Raëd Fathallah (Bredin Prat) and Nathalie Voser (Rothorn) for the Thursday morning panel “The Famous German Efficiency (?) – the Outside Perspectives.” Inka Hanefeld (Hanefeld) will moderate.
